If you were to use your imagination to conjure up the image of a
classic convertible in outstanding form, with maybe a couple of
subtle modifications to add a bit of distinction, chances are it
would look very similar, if not identical, to this 1968 Pontiac
Firebird Convertible. This one checks a lot of important boxes.
Glossy high-impact paint, with just the right amount of metallic
flake to really catch the sun? Check. Excellent fit and finish?
Check. Pristine chrome trim and bumpers? Also, check. You get the
idea. Add to that the fact that this vintage Pontiac is still
rocking its original engine and wears a nice fitting white canvas
convertible top and you have one seriously hard-to-find, timeless
ride.
The interior retains a largely factory configuration, revitalized
with red vinyl upholstery that has an authentically vintage
appearance. The overall freshness inside the doors is a welcome
sight in a UV-vulnerable convertible like this, and both the front
buckets, and the rear bench seat and door panels, look great. The
center console, as well as the most heavily trafficked touch
points, present nicely, and even the faux trim on the console has
its original pigmentation. Inside the instrument cluster, the
gauges sit behind clear lenses and, just to the right, a
retro-styled AM/FM stereo sits in place of the original. This is a
sharp-looking vintage driving environment by any measure.
Beneath the hood, the engine bay is well-maintained, with fresh
hoses and belts and properly routed wiring in plain sight. At its
center, the original 350-cubic-inch V8 holds court, equipped with a
Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor on its factory-style intake
manifold. The engine pairs with a period-correct 3-speed automatic
TH400 transmission that offered an upgrade to the Firebird's
standard drivetrain configuration when it was released. An upgraded
aluminum radiator sits up front to help regulate operating
temperatures and a closer look will reveal that both the alternator
and brake booster have been recently replaced. The latter activates
a power brake system that features discs up front, bringing this
classic to quick stops with minimal effort.
