Now here's a sharp classic compact pickup you don't see around too
often. This 1979 Chevrolet LUV Mikado Pickup 4x4 gets its high
impact exterior visuals from its luxury-level Mikado designation
and it's in good shape, displaying an array of factory-applied
decals against an orange backdrop that has a nice shine to it. Take
a closer look, and you'll also see that its chrome bumpers look
unusually fresh and its headlights are crystal clear and ready to
illuminate the path ahead. The metal tiedowns and textured bed
liner in back give a fitting nod to this truck's utilitarian
original intent. Only a relatively small percentage of Chevy LUVs
were equipped with this package and very few are still around these
days, so this well-maintained specimen represents a truly rare
opportunity.
As you climb inside, the first thing you'll likely notice is the
deep pigmentation of the surrounding surfaces. The vinyl bench
seat, and the pair of door panels it's bracketed by, are in clean
shape and the accenting chrome pieces have an impressive shine to
them. Judging by its unblemished, well-fitted appearance, the
carpeting below was only recently installed. This classic pickup
was outfitted with an aftermarket sunroof and it's a great feature,
with a tight fit to keep the elements from intruding. The factory
steering wheel still holds its position on the column and the dash
area beyond is well-preserved, with clear gauges in the instrument
cluster and a fresh pad spanning the width of the cabin.
The engine bay is nice and tidy, harboring a 1.8-liter
four-cylinder engine at its center. Fed by a two-barrel carburetor,
this compact but capable powerplant is in good working order,
propelling this classic truck with plenty of enthusiasm. The
accompanying 4-speed manual transmission is in matching condition,
running through its gears with no issues at all to make for a
reassuringly solid driving experience. This Chevy's power brakes
include a pair of discs in front to provide all the fade-resistant
stopping ability you could want and, should the desire to take on
tougher terrain come over you, its four-wheel drive function is no
mere novelty. It's completely functional and ready to unleash
additional agility via the set of locking hubs on the front
wheels.
