Sure, it may be in full possession of its factory appearance while
featuring some hidden upgrades to take its performance to the next
level, but no one would be likely to refer to this 2003 Mercury
Marauder 5-speed as a "sleeper". Clad in its factory-correct
attention-grabbing black paint, this is a ride that can easily
stand on its own aesthetic laurels. Of course, that's not to
minimize those aforementioned enhancements, which really do make
this venerable Mercury a lot of fun to drive. The curb appeal on
this cruiser is on point, with refreshed paint that holds a nice
shine and an assembly of original badging that's securely in place.
The 18" Marauder wheels it cruises on may have a subtle aftermarket
appearance, but they also came standard issue when this car rolled
out more than 20 years ago.
The original Midnight Black interior has held up well over the
years, and while its front buckets do show some expected wear, they
look ready to offer plenty more miles of driving enjoyment. The
position of the Hurst manual shifter on the transmission tunnel may
cause you to do a double take, as it's not something you see very
often on a car from this era, but a seamless installation places it
within comfortable reach to put control of this Marauder's
performance squarely in the hands of the driver. Coming along at a
time when enhanced comfort and convenience features had become the
norm, it includes power seats, power windows, power door locks, and
keyless remote entry on board and functioning just as intended.
This sharp post-millennium ride is powered by a 4.6-liter DOHC V8
that's running in fine form. Fed by electronic fuel injection, the
engine has been outfitted with a K&N cold air intake system to
up its performance, and it exhales into a pair of SW exhaust
headers to minimize back pressure. The accompanying 5-speed Tremec
3650 manual transmission makes for a driver-centric drivetrain
that's completed by an 8.8" 4:10 ratio rear end that really
enhances off-the-line performance. Four-wheel power disc brakes and
smooth power steering make stopping and navigation nice and easy,
while the standard radiator pairs with an electric cooling fan to
keep temperatures in check.
