It is amazing how, when it comes to classic cars, two letters and
three numbers can instantly open up a floodgate of memories and a
rush of adrenaline. Fully repainted in its original Olympic Gold,
this 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Tribute looks every bit the
boulevard bruiser as it would have half a century ago.
Inside, we find a nicely redone black vinyl interior. A center
console separates dual bucket seats, while a three-spoke
power-assisted wheel proudly displays the Chevy logo. A three-pod
gauge cluster features a big 120 mph speedometer, while a trio of
Sunpro auxiliary gauges are situated under the dash. This SS
Tribute has opted for a radio delete, but don't worry, because that
big Hurst T-bar shifter provides more entertainment than speakers
ever could.
Under that expansive hood, we find a clean engine bay with a big
396-cubic-inch V-8. A chrome air cleaner and matching valve covers
contrast the old-school primer-orange block and intake manifold.
Fed by a single four-barrel carburetor, this big block does away
with spent gases through a set of long tube headers and dual
exhaust capped off with a pair of sweet-sounding FlowMaster
mufflers to give this Chevelle its muscle car rumble. That power is
routed through a tried-and-true Muncie M20 four-speed manual
transmission before heading out to the 12-bolt rear end that
transfers those ponies to the pavement via a set of 14-inch SS
wheels shod in 225/70R-14 Cooper Cobra rubber.
