Such a sharp specimen of post-war luxury! This 1946 Mercury Coupe
is one of those rare classics from decades long past that retains
its convincing original form but also features some pivotal
modifications that enhance its drivability, as well as the
enjoyment of its next lucky owner. It wears Maize Yellow paint that
mirrors a Mercury color option when it first debuted, and it still
retains a shine that's accented nicely by a collection of chrome
bumpers and trim whose pristine condition belies their age. Take a
lap around this good-looking ride and you'll likely be impressed at
how clean its body lines still are, and how its doors, hood, and
trunk shut with a reassuring thud. The weatherstripping was likely
replaced not all that long ago and still protects the door jambs,
drip rails, and interior from the elements.
Climb inside and you'll find yourself surrounded by a dark red
vinyl interior that has an authentically vintage appearance and
clean condition, along with some welcome upgrades that enhance
driving enjoyment. The split bench front seat really looks great
and sits over an expanse of matching carpeting with no noticeable
stains or wear points. A factory steering wheel with that classic
Mercury insignia at its center still holds its position on the
column, and the factory-issue gauges behind it are nice and clear,
accompanied by a quartet of aftermarket counterparts mounted below
the dash. The addition of a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player with an
auxiliary port that offers plenty of audio options.
Lift this Mercury's sculpted hood and you'll see an engine bay
that's well-maintained, with a 239-cubic-inch flathead V8 at its
center that's been outfitted with a pair of Edelbrock cylinder
heads and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor to increase its abilities
without seriously detracting from the compartment's largely
authentic appearance. This flathead actually represented quite an
advancement when it was released, in that it featured more torque
than previous iterations of the V8, and it's trailed by an
integrated bell housing that drastically reduced drivetrain
vibrations over earlier models. An electric fan has been added to
keep engine temperatures down, along with an MSD ignition to
maximize spark.
