Still dressed in its factory-correct color and displaying the
signature look that prompted its creators to market it as the
"European-style" alternative to its more famous stablemate, this
1967 Mercury Cougar XR7 represents the inaugural year of its
breakthrough model, boasting a distinctively refined appearance
that really sets it apart from the crowd. Check out those hideaway
headlights, which open and close without issue and stand by behind
their distinctive "dual electric shaver" covers, as well as the
long hood and generous wheelbase. This Cougar's Polar White paint
has a nice shine and is accompanied by chrome bumpers and exterior
trim that shows well. The featured black vinyl top, so often an
area prone to damage from the elements, still has its deep
pigmentation and fits snugly, which adds to its vintage Ford's
vibrant appearance.
The accompanying parchment interior, representing one of Ford's
most coveted interior shades during this Cougar's era, still looks
sharp. The bucket seats still retain their original padding and
have the tight stitching they started with, and are bracketed by
door panels in matching condition. The dash area is another strong
suit for this classic, with a clean black pad spanning the width of
the cabin and the glossy faux wood trim closely associated with
this model in fine shape. Just above the center console, you'll
find a factory-correct Motorola AM/FM/8-track stereo in place,
still performing its duties without a hitch, and it combines with a
pair of added 6" kick panel speakers to provide a
period-appropriate audio experience. The factory air conditioning
system has been upgraded to modern R134 and blows nice and cold for
comfort during the hotter months.
Raise that generously proportioned hood and you'll see a
period-correct 289-cubic-inch V8 residing in a well-maintained
compartment, with a chrome stabilizer bar in place just above. The
engine features electronic fuel injection via an added Holley
Sniper system and is running strong, pairing with a 3-speed
automatic C4 transmission to make up a combination that's sure to
impress during a test drive. The surrounding belts, hoses, and
wires are also nice and fresh. A closer look around the engine bay
will reveal a firewall, inner fenders, and radiator support that
appear to be very solid. Power brakes that position discs up front
make this Cougar easy to stop, and its featured power steering
makes for low-effort navigation.
