Some cars just stand the test of time better than others. One look
at this Graphite Gray Metallic 2002 BMW M3, and it's easy to see
why this iconic machine is one of those cars. Compared to the
standard 3-Series, the E46 M3 featured a unique front fascia,
widened fenders, special side skirts, and model-specific wheels,
all making the third generation of Bimmer's superstar car the
benchmark by which all other sports cars would be measured against
during the majority of the 2000s.
Inside, BMW didn't forget that the M3 also needed to be a luxury
car. A driver-centric cockpit begins with an aftermarket Recaro
driver's seat, designed to keep this car's pilot comfortably in
place, no matter how many G-forces try to interfere. A
power-assisted, M-spec steering wheel comes complete with thumb
controls for the stereo and cruise control. A four-pod gauge
cluster features a 180 mph speedometer and a 9,000 rpm tachometer
that utilizes colored warning lights to alert the driver when they
approach the redline. A digital tachometer shows off this car's
134,272 actual miles, proving there is plenty of joy left to be had
from behind the wheel. A heated passenger seat, sunroof, power
locks, windows, and mirrors provide all the modern amenities one
could ask for. At the same time, the Harmon Kardon AM/FM/CD premium
sound system handles soundtrack duties.
Under the hood, we first find a Dinan strut tower brace. Beneath
that lies a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter DOHC inline-six-cylinder
engine. Thanks to variable valve timing, multipoint fuel injection,
and a high-revving disposition, this S54 motor could pump out an
impressive 333 horsepower at 7,900 rpm and 262 pound-feet of torque
at 4,900 rpm. This particular car features a set of catless shorty
headers and an aftermarket exhaust, which means it is likely
capable of producing more power than when it was completely stock.
Those ponies are routed through a tried-and-true six-speed manual
transmission before being sent out to the M 'Variable' limited-slip
rear differential.
