Vehicle Description
The Franklin Automobile was produced in America from 1902 - 1934 in
Syracuse, New York. In 32 years of existence roughly 150,000 cars
were produced. The car was very unique as it is air cooled. As
times changed and the race to the automotive top, Franklin added a
"dummy" radiator up front to make it look like every other car that
was being produced. The Franklin was a "luxury" car and was the
choice of many for long road trips do the ease of the throttle.
The company started seeing financial problems in 1927 and prices
started to drop and so did profit returns. The crash in 1929 and
the Great Depression severely damaged the company. In 1931 the
company built the Model 153 and it was to be the body that housed
the air cooled v12 engine. The hard economic times and lack of
sales never allowed for this.
Tired of going to a car show and parking next a car similar to
yours? This one is sure to eliminate that and put a smile on your
face. The 1931 model 153 4 door is not something you see every day.
The car features a steel frame, many early Franklin's featured a
wooden frame. It features an air-cooled 6 cylinder(believed to be
274 CID capable of 100 horsepower) mated to 3 speed manual
transmission. The car weighs 4,850 lbs. Only 2,800 cars were
produced in 1931, making this beauty fairly rare. According to the
owner, the car was sold new in Maine and restored by a Franklin Car
Club member in the 1990's and then made its way to Michigan. The
colors are believed to be correct. The car runs great and handles
as it should. The car rides on wooden spoked wheels with metal
hubcaps. The car has a rear mounted spare with tire cover. Inside
the car is in immaculate condition complete with rear window shade.
The car comes with a car cover.
