Finished by Ferrari in January of 1983, 44761 would be delivered
new on March 1st in 1983 at Lake Forest Sportscars in Lake Bluff,
Illinois.
This Berlinetta Boxer is a stellar survivor, preservation class
example, which has remained completely unmolested over the years.
Its previous owners have shown immense care in the stewardship of
this rare Ferrari and it shows in every small detail.
Speaking volumes of how well the car was treated, the owner from
October 2001 to October 2009 took meticulous notes by hand, noting
both the mileage and maintenance history. After adding only 10,500
miles over eight years, the prancing horse would find a new owner
by the name of Dave Helms. Helms of Scuderia Rampante in Erie,
Colorado would purchase the car and would then go into the personal
collection of Tom Horan. Horan is the board chairman for the
Colorado Grand, a 1,000-mile rally of 1960 or earlier sports cars
that rolls through the Rocky Mountains.
In the winter of 2015, before Horan would take ownership of the
car, the Boxer would receive an exhaustive, comprehensive service,
going through every system and ensuring that each performed at
100%. A full engine-out service was performed, which included all
of the sodium-filled valves were replaced with stainless, upgraded
head gaskets were installed and the infamous Ferrari camshaft belts
were entirely replaced. All new period correct TRX tires were also
fitted on all four corners of the Ferrari.
Upon arriving at Canepa, it was apparent how well the car was cared
for throughout its life. To find a survivor car in this good of
condition continues to become a rarity, and one that presents so
well even more of an improbability. The car was hand cleaned from
tip to tip, ensuring the factory surfaces were cared for and
returned to their former glory, and polishing the factory Rosso
Corsa paint back to a brilliant shine. Very little was needed to
bring this Boxer back up to show quality standards.
The 512BB was Pininfarina designed, and built by Scaglietti, and is
the very last of the handmade Ferraris where passionate Ferrari
craftsmen touched every part. This original, unrestored car still
shows the marks of their hands and is unabashedly authentic. This
Berlinetta Boxer is ready to be a preservation show winner, as well
as a terrific companion on a thrilling drive.
