This award-winning 1962 Tri-Powered Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster, serial # 2Y89Z159493, is being offered for sale at NO RESERVE at the New England Auto Auction™. Only 1,427 Sports Roadsters were produced in 1962, and this one comes loaded with factory and dealer options. This Thunderbird is a well-known, award-winning vehicle with extensive documentation on its history, its victories, and its restoration.
Manufactured and invoiced to Courtesy Motor Sales, Inc., on West Grand Avenue in Chicago in April 1962, this Thunderbird was trimmed out with the full package of dealer options. Although the serial number depicts a different engine code, this Sports Roadster is a true original Tri-Power vehicle. The “M-code” 340 hp package, which included the appropriate cylinder heads and triple carburetors, was a factory dealer option and installed at Courtesy Motors when it arrived. This is documented on the invoice and window sticker. Also included for options was the dealer-installed chrome engine package, Kelsey Hayes wire wheels, factory fiberglass rear seat cover, and four-way electric seat.
Prior to its restoration, this Thunderbird spent 19 years in the Blackhawk Collection in California. In 2003, the vehicle underwent a complete restoration, as documented by stacks of receipts and photographs. Following restoration, this vehicle won Best of Show three years in a row at the Thunderama Regional Thunderbird show hosted by the New England Vintage Thunderbird Club. Not only did this vehicle win three times in a row, it was never defeated. After this Bird’s successive wins, Thunderama changed the rules in 2007, limiting the number of times a vehicle could win Best of Show. Official notification of this rule change does come with car, as well.
