1951 was the year Pontiac celebrated their Silver Anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, all 1951 Pontiacs featured a unique wing styled grill. A rigid frame with a 120 inch wheelbase served as the backbone for eight different body styles. The 239 cubic inch straight-6 was standard for all models, but it was the 249 cubic inch straight-8, with 116 horsepower that really gained the American public's attention. Also available was the shiftless "Hyrda-Matic" automatic transmission which GM said "smooths out every driving situation - even hills and mountains." One of the most coveted models from the 1951 Pontiac catalog were the Chieftain and Streamliner Station Wagons. These family-friendly cruisers featured an all metal body with simulated wood trim on the exterior and real oak trim for the interior. This set up eventually gave the model the nickname of "Tin Woody" and matched a classic appearance with a more contemporary design.
