conceived in response to the U.S. Army\'s requirement for a
single-platform High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle HMMWV
to replace its aging and varied - to 1 -ton vehicle fleet for
front-line combat and support roles. Diesel power and an automatic
transmission were required, and the vehicles had to be capable of
carrying a variety of weapon systems. Following an extremely
rigorous test and evaluation program, AM General was awarded a
contract for 2,334 HMMWVs in March 1983. Deliveries commenced in
early 1985 and some 72,000 were built by mid-1991. The HMMWV,
better known as the Humvee, gained iconic status from its extensive
use during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the Middle
East and nearly 300,000 have been built to date. Over 40
international governments have adopted the Humvee, and it is now
every bit as famous as the GPW or Jeep of WW II and Korean War
fame./p\r\np /p\r\npRecognizing a winner, General Motors purchased
the Hummer name and distribution rights and began selling the
barely civilianized Hummer H1 through select dealerships.
Unmistakable with its rugged bodywork, unique suspension geometry,
and brute power, the Hummer H1 became highly popular and begat the
smaller and tamer H2 and H3 road models often seen today.
Nonetheless, the original H1 remains an instantly-recognized icon
with unbeatable purity of purpose and the adaptability to tackle
any job thrown at it./p\r\np /p\r\npThis 1990 AM General Humvee was
converted into an M12025 armored Slantback weapons-carrier model.
In addition to its battle-designed armored roof design for
protection against enemy fire, this HMMWV also features armored
Kevlar X doors, an armored gun-turret shield complete with .50
caliber pintle-type gun mount. This Hummer rides on a fully
independent suspension and 37x16.50 Goodyear MT military tires with
armored run flats and is equipped with an A2 model air drop rear
bumper with swing-out spare tire carrier with spare upgrade. Other
combat features include a SIGNAR antenna base with mount, gunner\'s
seat assembly, A2 commander bucket seat upgrades, and new
military-spec CARC 636A Desert Tan paint. The Hummer\'s legendary
power and torque are delivered by a 6.5L Detroit Diesel V-8 engine
rated at 170 horsepower, mated to a GM 3L80 3-speed automatic
transmission. Unlike other Humvees on the market today, this
example is a real armored slantback. Be prepared for the zombie
apocalypse and don\'t leave home without it!/p\r\np /p
