For Sale: 1966 Ford Mustang in Pioneer, California

Vehicle Description

A Condition 2 (Excellent) condition.  Bought the car in 1981.  Condition was poor with front end clipped.  Restored professionally

Every day, while going to work in 1981, I would go from Hwy 280 to Hwy 101 through the quiet neighborhood of San Carlos, CA. Each day I would pass this 1966 Ford Mustang propped up on jacks in a driveway. For almost two years, I would notice that it was still there; nothing changed. Then one day I noticed a gentleman working in the garden. So, I stopped and asked about the condition and possible sale of the Mustang. His reply was: “No, I am working on it”. Another year had passed, every day that I went to work, yet again the car remained on its jacks—never moved. Then, one day the car was gone! I thought I had missed out. In a couple of weeks later, the car was back to its original position. It turned out that the driveway had to be repaired and the car was moved for the driveway pour. I again went to the residence and inquired about the condition and sale of the Mustang. The women who answered said: “why yes, my husband had just passed away and I do not have any more use for the car”. I made an offer and she accepted. I then towed the car to my home—forty miles south. The women revealed some history of the car and that her daughter had driven the car and got into several fender-benders and it was then taken away from her. It sat on jacks for approximately three years exposed to the elements of the mild Bay Area weather. It was mostly covered, but not all of the time. Thankfully, only a small amount of rust damage was found in each rear quarter panel and no where else. The damage of the front end body work was extensive which had resulted from the previously mentioned fender-benders. However, there was no frame damage. The body repair and paint job was performed by a local San Jose Mustang specialty shop --Mustang’s Only. They were responsible for the resurrection of the outside appearance of the car. Figures 1-6 illustrate the details of the front end, the fender replacement and the rear end body work.

From 1989 to 1996, the interior of the car was upgraded. A walnut steering wheel and Rally Pac were added.. New Pony upholstery seat coverings and door sides were installed. New carpeting was installed as well as a new rag top. From numerous swap meets, various chrome pieces were located for the windshield and shades. During this period, the front end was replaced, including the power steering ram. A front power disc brake system was installed. The heads were replaced and the thermactors were no longer needed. The valves were upgraded to handle unleaded gasoline. The automatic transmission was replaced with a four speed transmission. This required a new clutch pedal and support assembly. Also, a new console had to be installed. Finally, the rear end was reconditioned with a new 2.08:1 ratio gear. New springs were also installed. In 1996, the Mustang was loaded on a trailer and transported to a new coral—Pioneer, CA. A new gas tank was installed and the gas lines were cleaned to remove residue from the gas lines. The transmission cluster gear was removed and a steeper angle gear was installed. With this feature, the transmission would no longer “pop out of first” while under no load. The car was never driven more than a total of 500 miles in 30 years and never exposed to the weather. This year, 2017, I decided to sell the Mustang. After all, I’m 85 years old! Prior to its sale, I had to replace the five tires, due to their age (20 years). I commissioned American-Mustang Parts of Rancho Cordova, CA to go through the car and assure that it would be at or close to a #2 condition Mustang. New brake cylinders and new master cylinder were replaced. An electronic distributor was installed. Door alignment was made and new latches were installed. The rag top rear window was replaced as well as the windshield. The console wiring was replaced.
