For Sale: 1969 Volkswagen Meyers Tow d in Dearborn, Michigan

Vehicle Description

This very cool, very unique and very rare 1969 Meyers Tow'd is available at Gateway Classic Cars in our Detroit Showroom. The Meyers Manx was the brain child of famed engineer, artist, boat builder and surfer Bruce Meyer. In short, Bruce created a one of a kind car that would set off road records, win races and become one of the most iconic car crazes in pop culture by creating the Dune Buggy. The Manx had won 39 out of 41 slalom races and won its class in the Pike's Peak Hill Climb. It handled better than any other off-road vehicle and was much more fun to drive due to its light weight and supple suspension - as Car and Driver stated back in the 60's. Ah, but that wasn't enough for Mr. Meyer - he wanted more, much more. Thus the creation of the Meyer Tow'd. Aptly named as it was supposed to be towed to and from the dunes or off road site having no hood or fenders it was never intended to be for road use clearly stated by the tow arm sticking out of the nose for easy hitching. The body was smaller and lighter than the Manx and was built on a custom tube frame instead of the shortened Beetle frame as the Manx. The Tow'd was the thrill seekers off road dream vehicle. Where its V8 competitors got bogged down pushing their way out of the sand the Tow'd danced right across it. But due to its non street use, heavy copying by competitors and tragic crash Bruce sustained in a Tow'd severing his foot at the ankle, the Tow'd ended production at under 1000 made. Shimmering in red/orange with totally rad green, green, blue, grey flames singing over a black nose make you feel like it's more surfboard than off road vehicle. Ready for all your off road pleasures. Built as 145th in production, February 1969 with a real fiberglass shell where some early models were supplied in a very brittle plastic shell. This 1969 Meyers Tow'd has only 20 miles since rebuild and as many have been rebuilt, customized and replaces this does feature a period correct Candy Blue 1973-74 VW 1700cc duel port engine to help you dance across those dunes. 4 speed manual with Hurst straight shaft shifter and wood handle are pure old school but when you're strapped down with harness safety belts and you hit the accelerator to spin those super wide off road tires you'll feel like a kid in school. Pure unadulterated fun is the only feeling that will exist. For the price of a well equipped jet-ski or snow mobile you can own a piece of history and have fun in the snow, sand or dirt year round. I'd bet its lot cheaper than therapy too - and way more effective.
