In 1991 Lotus revived the legendary Elan, which had been out of production since 1975. Rather than update the basic ideas behind the original Elan, the new Lotus Elan M100 was still a small two-seat roadster, but it was front-wheel drive, one detail that put it in stark contrast to the traditional rear-drive design of the original Elan. For this car, Lotus employed a Japanese-made drivetrain. This was largely the result of Lotus having been acquired by General Motors, and GM's substantial interest in Isuzu. The engine Lotus selected for the Elan was an Isuzu twin-cam 1,588 cc unit (almost the same displacement as the original Elan). Lotus engineering reworked the engine and added a turbocharger with an intercooler. The turbocharged motor produces 162 hp. This is a light and quick car; the 0-60 time is just 6.5 seconds. The car’s top speed is reportedly 137 mph. The car has a five-speed manual transmission, that works smoothly. The bodywork is fiberglass without any flaws, built on ta traditional Lotus steel backbone chassis.
