STORY:

THIS CAR WAS ORDERED ORIGINALLY NEW BY GARRAND’S TOYOTA SALES, INC LOCATED IN PLATTSBURGH, NY.  IT WAS ORDERED WITH STANDARD FEATURES AND THE OPTIONAL COLD KIT.  THE CAR WAS SOLD TO WILLIAM BURNS ON JANUARY 7TH, 1977.  COINCIDENTALLY THE SALESPERSONS NAME WAS MARC AND HE SPELLED IT THE WAY I DO.  AS THE ORIGINAL BILL OF SALE INDICATES THE SALE PRICE WITH EXTRAS WAS $5,510.50.  IT APPEARS THE CAR SPENT IT’S ENTIRE LIFE IN NEW YORK AS THE GENTLEMAN I PURCHASED IT FROM PURCHASED IT FROM A GENTLEMAN FROM NEW YORK.   AS QUOTED FROM THE GENTLEMAN I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM,

“I PURCHASED THE 1977 TOYOTA CELICA GT LIFTBACK ROUGHLY 10 YEARS AGO FROM AN INDIVIDUAL IN UPSTATE NEW YORK.  I FOUND IT ON EBAY.  A LOT OF THINGS DREW ME TO THE CAR.  IT WAS VERY LOW MILEAGE ( JUST OVER 30K MILES , ACCIDENT FREE, LITTLE TO NO RUST AND AN EXCELLENT INTERIOR.  IT HAD BEEN PARKED IN A GARAGE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS AS EVIDENCED BY PAPERWORK ACCOMPANYING THE CAR SHOWING THE MILEAGE FROM A VEHICLE TEST COMPLETED YEARS EARLIER.

MY FIRST CAR UPON GRATUATING FROM COLLEGE WAS A 1976 TOYOTA CELICA LIFTBACK WHICH WAS INDENTICAL  TO THE THIS ONE EXCEPT THE 1976 MODEL YEAR USED LEADED FUEL AND IT ONLY HAD A DRIVERS SIDE MIRROR.  THE 1977 MODEL ADDED A PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR AND USED UNLEADED FUEL.  IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL CAR AND I WANTED TO HAVE ONE AGAIN.  I WANTED TO RESTORE IT TO NEAR SHOWROOM CONDITION KNOWING FULL WELL THAT I WOULD PROBABLY SPEND MUCH MORE THEN IT WOULD BE WORTH.

THE WORK WAS DONE PROFESSIONALLY BY A COMPANY IN CLEVES, OH.  EVERYTHING WAS REMOVED FROM THE CAR EXCEPT THE ENGINE.  THE BODY WAS STRIPPED AND COMPLETELY PAINTED.  WHEN IT WAS STRIPPED IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE CAR WAS ACCIDENT FREE.  I FOUND AS MANY NOS PARTS AS POSSIBLE AND INSTALLED THEM IN THE CAR.  EVERYTHING ON THE CAR IS OEM OR NOS.  THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS THE CARPETED FLOOR MATS.  HOWEVER, I DID KEEP THE OEM RUBBER FRONT FLOOR MATS THAT ARE ORIGINAL WITH THE CAR.  THERE ARE ALSO MULTIPLE PHOTOS OF THE RESTORATION.  LITTLE WAS DONE TO THE ENGINE BEYOND A QUICK TUNE UP INCLUDING NEW PLUGS AND OIL FILTER.  GIVEN THE LOW MILEAGE LITTLE NEEDED TO BE DONE.  TO MY KNOWLEDGE THE ONLY NON-FUNCTIONING EQUIPEMENT ON THE CAR IS THE CLOCK.  ADDITIONALLY, THE ESP SYSTEM IS A BIT SENSITIVE PROBABLY DUE TO A FEW TEMPERAMNETAL SENSORS (RADIATOR, FOR EXAMPLE).

THE CAR WAS SHOWN AT THE AULT PARK CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE IN CINCINNATI, OH.  IT WAS AWARDED THE “AWARD OF DISTINCTION”.  ALSO AT THE SHOW WERE CARS FROM THE TOYOTA MUSEUM IN TORRANCE, CA.  THE CURATOR FROM THE MUSEUM COMMENTED THAT MY 1977 TOYOTA CELICA GT LIFTBACK WAS A BETTER EXAMPLE THAN THE ONE THEY HAD IN THEIR MUSEUM.

I ENJOYED THE CAR FOR 10 YEARS DURING WHICH TIME IT NEVER HAS SEEN RAIN AND WAS KEPT COVERED IN A GARAGE WHEN NOT IN USE.  IT WAS DRIVEN PRIMARILY TO VARIOUS CAR SHOWS AND TOYOTA DELAERSHIPS FOR SPECIAL EVENTS.  HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS UNDERSTAND THE BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF THIS CAR.  COMPLETE RECORD OF THE RESTORATION AND OTHER MATERIAL IS INCLUDED.”

THIS 1977 TOYOTA CELICA GT LIFTGATE IS A VERY RARE CAR WITH GREAT HISTORY.  IT HAS 32,263 ORIGINAL MILES! IT ALSO HAS A LOT OF DOCUMENTATION.  MOST OF THE JAPANESE VEHICLES FROM THE 70’S ARE LONG GONE AND THE MOST OF THE REMAINING ONES AREN’T NICE.  NOT ONLY DOES THIS CAR HAVE GREAT HISTORY AND LOW MILEAGE BUT IT RETAINS THE ORIGINAL SHEETMETAL, ORIGINAL EXTERIOR COLOR, ORIGINAL INTERIOR AND ORIGINAL DRIVETRAIN.  THE EXTERIOR BODY IS VERY STRAIGHT WITH GREAT GAP LINES.  THE PAINT IS SHOW QUALITY AND COLOR SUITS THE CAR VERY WELL.  EVERYTHING ON THE EXTERIOR WAS REPLACED OR RESTORED.  THE INTERIOR IS ORIGINAL AND IN VERY NICE CONDITION.  THE TRUNK COMPARTMENT IS ALSO ORIGINAL AND IN VERY NICE CONDITION.  THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS HIGHLY DETAILED AND WELL SORTED.  THE ENGINE RUNS EXCELLENT.  THE UNDERCARRIAGE WAS UNDERCOATED AT SOME POINT AND VERY CLEAN THROUGHOUT.  THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF RUST OR ANY ISSUES.  THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE A CLASSIC VEHICLE THAT’S GAINING MOMENTUM IN COLLECTIBILITY.
