Car Club are pleased to present this 1978 Plymouth Volare Super
Coupe! Here's a rare one. The Volare Super Coupe was available for
the 1978 model year only, and came as a result of Chrysler's effort
to build a performance image for the F-body line of cars. The
"Super Coupe" designation was actually an option on the Volare, and
it didn't come cheap. When new, the Super Coupe package was a
$1,416 add-on, which equated to about a third of the car's entire
price. Adjusted for 2017 dollars, that's a $5,186 option. While
sales were less than stellar, having sold only 494 total units, the
Super Coupe's performance was impressive. When it debuted, the
Volare Super Coupe was quicker from zero to sixty than the Camaro
Z28, Corvette, and Firebird Trans-Am. And to ensure the car wasn't
just a straight-line performer, the Super Coupe was fitted with
heavy duty suspension, a rear sway bar, and GR60 x 15" rubber
tucked into the wheel wells . Every Volare Super Coupe was painted
in the same color scheme you see here, Crimson Sunfire with yellow,
orange, and red striping. Very late-70s cool. The F-body twins
(Volare and Aspen) were initially met with praise, having actually
been named Car and Driver's Car of the Year in 1976. However, this
great reputation didn't last; the F-body cars were plagued with
recalls. As a result, many examples weren't taken care of and have
succumbed to time. While many Volare's were neglected, this
particular Volare has been well taken care of; we purchased the car
from an enthusiastic owner who had owned the car for nearly twenty
years and always kept it garaged. Exterior: Body is in excellent
condition; there are no dents, dings, or scuffs. The car saw a B
quality repaint in Crimson/Black about ten years ago. While there
are very little signs of wear or aging, with no scratches or
significant chips, the paint isn't factory quality. There is
visible paint run on the black rear bumper. The paint is decent but
nor perfect and as you can see it shows really well! Factory wheel
arch flares and rear quarter louvers give the Super Coupe a
muscular look, and the racecar-like pinstriping reinforces that.
New pinstripes were applied following the paint-job and show very
nicely. Wheels are in excellent condition, Dunlop G/T Qualifier
tires are in excellent shape as well, though are a bit dated. All
trim presents nicely with no oxidation. All four wheel arch flares
are in excellent condition, aside from a very minor blemish on the
front right flare. Glass is free of chips or cracks, though there
are markings on the glass from rubbing on the inside of the door
panel. We also note the typical windhsield wiper scratch that makes
the arch of the movement. Lights are all clear, crack-free, and
functional. The inside of the door jambs show no signs of rust
formation or overspray. Panel fitment is spot-on and doors open and
close without any fuss. Interior: Red vinyl interior presents very
well. There are a few burst seams on the bottom of the driver's
seat, but the seat back is intact and the passenger seat is in
excellent shape. Red dash, seats, door panels, carpet, and
headliner remain vibrant, with the only areas showing any fading or
darkening being the center console and door panel armrests. The
dash has a couple light cracks, nothing through. Carpet is in nice
shape throughout, with no tears or stains.
