The Pinnacle of BMW's Hallowed 2002 Series, Widely Recognized as
the first "M" Model
Ideal for Shows, BMW Club Gatherings, Rallies and Tours Around the
World
Europe's First Turbocharged Production Car; Demands for increased
power for its medium-sized saloon had prompted BMW to introduce the
original 2002 in 1968, and it was the fuel-injected 2002tii that
provided the basis for the model's ultimate expression - the Turbo
- which was readily distinguishable by its deep front air dam,
wheelarch extensions and boot-mounted spoiler. This
top-of-the-range model had been introduced following a successful
racing program that saw a works entered, turbocharger equipped 2002
win the 1969 European Touring Car Championship in the hands of
Dieter Quester. Faced with having to compete against the Porsche
911 & Alfa Romeo GTA, BMW opted for 'bolt on' horsepower courtesy
of a turbocharger in a compact package resulted in outstanding
performance and the fastest and most exciting medium-sized sports
saloon of its day. Produced for the 1973/74 season only, this rare
model is rightly regarded as a modern classic and highly sought
after.
Never sold new to North America and rarely seen in the
States...
4290489 offered here, retains its numbers-matching engine and is
equipped with the highly desirable 5-spd (dogleg) manual
transmission. It was manufactured on April 30, 1974 in Chamonix
paint over customary black upholstery, and registered new by
Wolfgang Geduhn on May 28, 1974 of Hasbergen, Germany. The Turbo
was later transferred to Kurt Hinke of Dinslaken on December 6,
1974 and later Joachim Heller of Dinslaken as well on March 27,
1975, with license plate number OB-AT 333. Karl-Wilhelm Stollen
eventually took ownership in May 1980 while residing in Bleysfeld
and reregistered the vehicle in Oberhausen in 1986, while
continuing to carry the same license plates which accompany the BMW
to this day. The car remained under the care of Mr. Stollen until
just recently when it was acquired by one of the Netherlands
foremost BMW specialists for restoration to like new condition.
Entering restoration as a very solid, complete, matching and honest
example, the Turbo would receive a meticulous complete nut-and-bolt
restoration to concours standards over the course of a year. Aside
from the gorgeous cosmetic finishes it now displays, the 2002's
mechanical and electrical components were fully addressed,
including new engine internals and wiring. This 2002 fully
exemplifies quality craftsmanship and panache as certainly the
finest 2002 Turbo we have ever seen. 4290489 comes complete with
original Owner's Manual, Turbo Supplement, BMW European Service
Directory, 1974 German Service Directory and Warranty Booklet in
vinyl folio, Model Repair Book, BMW Classic Certificate of
Authenticity, Original German Title Copy, Customs and Shipping
Documentation, Restoration photo file, Two Sets of Keys, Original
License Plates, original tool roll, jack, spare and emergency
accessories. This particular Turbo has yet to be concours shown or
vintage toured and will surely provide abundant opportunities for
its next caretaker to enjoy. Now available for worldwide purchase
