1932 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Shooting Brake in Bedford Heights, Ohio

Vehicle Description

Produced from 1929 to 1936, the Rolls Royce 20/25 was the most popular model offered by the esteemed British automaker prior to World War II. Successor to the “Twenty” series introduced in 1922, the 20/25 was of sufficient size to gracefully carry limousine coachwork, but at the same time compact enough that most any owner could personally take its wheel with comfort and confidence. (This could not be so readily said of the larger and typically chauffeur-drive Rolls Royce Phantom models that were the 20/25 contemporaries for most of its production period.)

Relatively economical to run, the 20/25’s durable overhead valve 3.7 Litre inline six engine provided the exceptionally quiet reliability that made Rolls-Royce ownership not only prestigious but also invitingly practical. After the 1932, the chassis’ four speed manual gearbox featured synchronized shifting on the upper two gears. Its mechanical four-wheel brakes incorporated a built-in mechanical assist. The electrical system operated on 12 volts.

This 129-inch wheelbase 20/25 from 1932 has its origins as a 4-door saloon body. The shooting brake body style was designed to handle utilitarian chores of country living with Rolls Royce style and reliability. This shooting brake body was expertly crafted and built in the style of the era even though the body builder is unknown. The materials used were the finest quality. The interior top slats were Bass Wood. The structure was high quality maple and the panels are mahogany. The expertly installed fabric top is still in excellent condition. As evidenced by the body plate this Rolls was delivered new by dealer Jack Barclay, LTD of London.

The frontal assembly is classic Rolls Royce in every detail, with the marque’s signature radiator grille lopped by the legendary Spirit of Ecstasy hood mascot. Thermostatically controlled stainless steel louvers are a correct and convenient feature of the later 20/25 such as this one. This shooting brake is equipped with Lucas headlamps and front fender lamps. Inside the dashboard and interior garnishes are of solid walnut, beautifully varnished and highly polished. A handsome full complement of gauges includes a rev counter. The chassis is lubricated by a single-shot foot operated Bijur system. The interior is authentically trimmed with high grade leather hides.

Nineteen-inch center lock wire-spoke wheels with the spare tire riding on the right-hand front wing. This car has 5 new Goodrich 600 x 19 whitewalls.

Chassis production of the 20/25 during 1929-1936 was 3,837. Rolls Royce enhanced the 20/25 engineering with 36 difference technical releases during its 9-year run including centralized chassis lubrication system, diamond engine mounting, improved engine performance, 5.75:1 compression ratio, electric fuel gauge, synchromesh on third and top gears.

Identified as chassis number GAU-2 and bearing engine number F3E this 20/25 retains its original British registration plates GX8285.

In 1993 mechanical work included a new clutch, tune-up, rebuilt water pump and starter. In 1994, the engine was rebuilt including a new cylinder head. The engine work and mechanicals were done by noted restorer Frank Cooke of The Vintage Garage. A complete binder of all work, invoices and correspondence is included.

Attractively priced, our offered 20/25 is sure to make any special occasion in which its owner participates even more memorable. It would also serve well to introduce a new owner to the exclusive prestige and pleasure of Classic Rolls Royce ownership.

This car is ready to be shown or driven on any Classic Car Club Caravan or Rolls Royce Owners Club event or tour.
