A dispute over racing ended Ford's attempt to acquire Ferrari in
the 1960s, but all was hardly lost. In retaliation, the Blue Oval
brand worked with Lola to revamp its Ford V-8 powered mid-engined
Mk6 into the Ford GT40. Its racing start was gloomy, but tweaks to
both the cars and the team's leadership dramatically turned things
around by 1966. The cars dominated endurance racing in the
mid-to-late 60s and were celebrated three decades later when Ford
showed off its GT90 concept at 1995's Detroit auto show. A
production Ford GT followed in the early 2000s to honor Ford's
history around its centennial. Powered by a supercharged version of
Ford's 5.4-liter V-8, the GT was thoroughly modernas close to a
road-legal racing car as Detroit had ever produced.
On offer is an example from the model's first year of production.
Presented in what appears to be Midnight Blue Metallic, the car's
odometer shows under 4,000-miles. The car features all four options
- a McIntosh sound system, forged alloy wheels, painted brake
calipers and white Le Mans stripes. With its stunning good looks
and impressive performance the 2005 Ford GT is truly a fitting
tribute to the original Ford GT40.
