The Model: For Porsche fans, there have been many ultimates in the
near 70-year history of the company. But one of the latest, street
legal ultimate performance machine has to be the 911 GT3. When
tested by Motor Trend the numbers they turned in were downright
impressive. 0-to-60 time, 3.1 seconds. Talk about neck-snapping
performance. In the quarter mile 11.3 seconds, or just under 123
MPH! It has stopping power too, from 60 MPH to dead-stop in just 98
feet. While this car can hold its own going down a drag strip, it
was really designed to make turns at speed, which it does
admirably. As veteran test Driver Randy Pobst said. "Could be the
best I've ever felt in a 911. The rear will let go in the middle of
a corner. It's drifty; it's alive. It still has a lot of
personality. There's a lot of race car in this street GT3. It is
very much, in many ways, a race car for the street." Since the
original GT3 hit the market nearly 18 years ago, Porsche has been
constantly working to improve the breed. While this is by far a
most impressive machine by today's standards, it makes you wonder
what other ultimates are in Porsche's future.
The Car: Having traveled less than 4,000 miles from new, this
remarkable machine is as close to new as you can hope to achieve.
Finished it Jet Black metallic it is complemented with dark gray
leather seats bolsters and matching seating surfaces in suede. This
isn't the type of car where you worry about radios or even
air-conditioning. With this car you check out those special wheels
equipped with the Michelin Cup Tires, 9-inches wide up front and a
full foot wide to the rear. Get into the driver's seat, and listen
to the engine purr, knowing that its red-line is a full 9,000 rpm.
Take it to the track and give it a spin, fell the G's pulling on
you and the car, yet it stays true to the course and with all of
the adaptive control devices you are able to adjust the suspension
to your liking. Even the rear deck mounted wing is adjustable. This
car has a base price right around $135,000, but with extra
equipment, like the Red-Caliber braking units, custom sound system
and other amenities, was closer to $150,000 before it was driven
off the lot. With all of the gas guzzling taxes already paid for,
this is a car that needs to be taken out and driven.
