The Model: Like most great things, the Plymouth SuperBird was born
out of competition and the one undeniable human condition: the
desire to win. In pursuit of NASCAR domination, Plymouth started
taking cars to the wind tunnel in the late 1960s, and what their
research proved was that a more aero-specialized car would be
extremely hard to beat. The exact formula that was used to fit the
Bird with its 23-inch high tail feathers isn't known to this day,
but what is known, is that the wind-tunnel data translated to
on-track wins. The cutting edge design that lengthened and shaped
the front end of the car and added the unmistakable wing to the
back was enough to lure Richard Petty back into a Plymouth, but car
buyers weren't initially sold on the awkward appearance of the car
as daily drivers. Homologation rules dictated that Mopar build 500
of their race cars in a road-going package and that they be for
sale at dealerships. The funny wing and sharp nose, in 1970, were a
bit gaudy for most consumers taste and many were left to languish
on showroom floors, some dealers even converted them back to
regular Roadrunners to get them sold.

As is usually the case though, retrospect looks fondly on
innovators and winners, and modern car collectors of every bred
agree that the winged beast, only produced for one year, have
become one of the most collectible and recognizable cars of all
time.
The Car:This rare bird gives you an overdose of Vitamin C Orange
that was laid as part of a quality restoration directed by the two
broadcast sheets still with the car. Although the restoration of
this car was done some time ago this car remains a quality driver's
car. Inside, the spartan interior reflects the materials of the
time and those materials remain in good condition. Fitted with the
original, numbers-matching commando 440 CI, this could-have-been
track star, is tuned up as if Smokey Yunick himself had done it.
Sure to impress going around the square and to increase in value
if squirreled away, this Mopar is a must-have for any serious
collector.
