Today we present you something a little different. Yes it is a
classic, and yes it is a Mercedes. For sale in our Dallas/Fort
Worth showroom is a 1963 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 404. Unimog is
actually a German acronym for Universal-Motor-Gerat, or Universal
Motor Machine in English, a fitting name when the vehicles
capabilities are examined. For those of you with history in the
off-road and 4-wheeling, you may already be familiar with the
Unimog. For those out of the loop though, let's dive into the beast
that is the Unimog. From the factory, these trucks have over 16
inches of ground clearance. This is thanks to the use of portal
axles. This allows the axle itself to be set above the center of
the tire, and then geared down to the tire at the wheel. With the
wheels pushed to the corners of the truck, and the portal axles
raising the body even further from the wheel hubs, traverse angles
for this truck are an incredible 45 degree approach and 46 degree
departure angle. Crawling up such a grade is far from a problem, as
this truck has not one, but two crawl gears. Second gear comes in
at a molasses dripping 8.23:1, while the 1st gear clocks in slower
than paint drying at 14.93:1. This particular Unimog is equipped
with, well not much. It is essentially a fast tractor, so what do
you expect? It does however come with the original owners manual, a
manual for rebuilding the carburetors, and an official Mercedes
workshop manual. If you are looking for an off-road toy that will
stand out from the rest of the Jeep and Truck crowd, then this is
it for you. To view this vehicle in greater detail including HD
