For Sale in our Ft. Lauderdale showroom is this awesome 1984
Volkswagen Sandrail. At the end of WW2 thousands of soldiers
returning from the war had spent years driving Jeeps, tanks, and
half-tracks with few or no roads. Having disposable income, these
GIs formed the original core of off-road enthusiasts. At first,
they used surplus Jeeps and cut-up cars to build their off-road
vehicles. Soon they noticed that with little more than a skid
plate, they could get a stock air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle to go
almost anywhere. As time passed, enthusiasts saw the need for
lighter, more powerful sand vehicles that could easily climb higher
dunes. Many people started experimenting with home built super
light weight vehicle frames made from metal tubing. Many of these
vehicles were nothing more than a frame, engine, transmission,
wheels, and one or two seats. Because of their versatility, light
weight and simplicity the air-cooled VW engine and tranny were the
power plant of choice for many owners. It also offered the perfect
body arrangement. By placing the motor and transmission in the rear
of the frame it allowed the front of the Sand Rail to remain
extremely light and able to "float" over the sand dunes. It also
kept the heat created by the motor from blowing into the faces of
the driver and passengers. It's no wonder Sand Rails are often
considered to have the perfect balance between power and weight.
