The 1970 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight was the largest in the lineup, with a wheelbase that measured 127 inches (3 longer than the Delta 88 and 15 inches longer than the Cutlass, 4-4-2, and F-85 two-door models). The Ninety-Eight measured 225.2 inches long and weighed over 4,400 lbs. Power was supplied by a large (and heavy) overhead valve 455 CID V8 engine with a cast-iron block. It offered 365 horsepower and was mated to a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission. The 98 was a luxurious vehicle with many amenities including power seats, power steering, power brakes with front discs, power windows, and a Deluxe steering wheel. The interior was comprised of vinyl, cloth, or leather. Body styles included a 2-door holiday hardtop, convertible, sedan, 4-door luxury hardtop, 4-door Holiday Hardtop, and 4-door Town Sedan. Pricing began at $4,450 and rose to over nearly $4,800.

The most popular body style was the 4-door sedan which saw 29,005 examples produced. 3,161 were convertibles making them the rarest in the line-up. 21,111 were the 2-door holiday hardtop and 19,377 were 4-door Luxury Hardtops. In total, over 95,800 examples were produced in 1970.

For 1970 the hood would be restyled after numerous customer complaints from dealership mechanics about bumping their heads on the extension. The new hood would delete the extension and leave a flat hood design.

Sharing the luxury side of Oldsmobile business with the Toronado, the 98 Series continued to be the largest Oldsmobile models in 1970 and they grew in length to 225.2 inches. All 98 models continued to be manufactured in Lansing and were designated with the code letter M in the Vehicle Identification Number.

The 1970 Old 98 convertible that you see here is an all original car with one repaint. The original color for the car is gulfstream blue and when it was repainted they painted the 98 a Dodge Viper blue metallic which does make the car stand out with the white convertible top and white leather interior. The sides of are laser straight and the gaps are true around the doors, hood, and trunk. All the bright chrome work on the car shines and sparkles in the sun as you can see from the pictures. When you walk around the car you won’t find many flaws on this original 98.

Slip inside and you see all the original dash and leather seats. The seats have very little wear marks and look like they just came from the factory. Lower the power convertible top and put down the power windows and you are ready for a summer cruise with the family. There is room for family and friends to enjoy taking the 98 for a spin. When you turn the key, and hear the 455ci/365HP v8 fire up you know that you have horses under the hood to cruise. Shift the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 into gear and you will see how smooth the 98 drives and cruises.

Our team did take the Olds 98 for an extensive test drive and found no flaws in the drive and handling of the car. This beauty will not last long, especially with spring just around the corner.
