The Model: In 1956, Maserati announced to new big engines, a 3.5
Liter in-line six and a revolutionary 4.5 Liter V8. Taking a
starring role in the world of racing was the very limited
production 450S. It attracted names like Behra, Moss and Fangio,
who all took turns behind the wheel of these impressive vehicles.
Even an American legend, Carroll Shelby drove a 450S, a car that he
affectionately nicknamed "Big Hawg". Compared to most of the
post-war racing machines produced by Maserati, which were in the
1.5 to 3.0 Liter range, these were massive cars. Maserati produced
just nine of these cars and each one carried unique features that
set them apart from the others. Unfortunately, being competition
vehicles several of them suffered major damage and were either
scrapped or destroyed. It is felt among experts that is one of
these cars were to come to the market today, it would be valued at
between six to eight million dollars, and those numbers are
probably on the conservative side.
The Car: We are proud to present an absolute beautifully built
automobile. As the owner has told us, "This superb Maserati
recreation is true to the original and has been built to a very
high standard, remaining true to the original drawings of the
Maserati 450s. Registered as a 1958 Maserati Historic Vehicle with
a V5C document confirming this. The car is built on a tubular
space frame, panelled in 3003 aluminium and finished in aircraft
grade enamel paint the engine is. 4933(cc) Maserati quadcam V8 with
four downdraft twin choke 45 DCNF carburetors, all this is mated to
a four-speed transaxle gearbox. This car offers power, noise and
speed in abundance. An exquisite car and beautifully presented."
Keeping true to the original design and concept of this car, about
the only major upgrade has employing a four-wheel disc brake
system. Finished Italian Race Red, the driver's cockpit is all
business. Attention to detail was applied with the wrap-around
Plexiglass windscreen, high mounted racing mirrors and an absolute
minimum of creature comforts. The custom exhaust system is routed
through stainless steel tubing and ported to body-side pipes.
Chrome wire wheels with knock-off hubs set off the visual impact of
this tribute to one of the greatest racing machines ever created.
This car will provide all the thrills, power and excitement of a
real 450S, but at a fraction of their values.
