The Model: Homologation is a funny word, that has given us some of
the best road going cars out there. In 1976 the desire to stand on
the top of the podium, and the pesky FIA rulebook, finally forced
Porsche to build what Americans always wanted: A Porsche that could
hold its own down the straights. We wanted POWER. The product of
tinkering in the Porsche R&D shop, that began in the 1960s, the
930 had it all with the addition of a turbo to the base 911. It was
nimble and had the zip of a turbocharged 3-liter engine. The
combination that put out 280-horsepower, has become a bit of an
urban legend with tales of unbridled tail-whipping power when the
turbo "kicked in." Perhaps exaggerated, the stories of power and
handling were enough to sell the upgraded sports cars until 1989.
With power peaking at a still respectable 330-horsepower, the path
to Porsche's modern machines was clear. Thirty-some-odd years
later, the Porsche 911 is an all-turbo line, ceasing production of
anything that breathes on its own in 2017.
The Car: Shaded with the factory Light Green Metallic hue, this
performance standout is an aesthetic pleasure, as well. With just
50-thousand miles under its belt, this time capsule has benefited
recently from a respray that brought it back to its full, stunning,
glory. Inside the factory appointments remain clean and complete,
reflecting the careful use this car was treated to. Well-equipped
with those features standard on American-market cars, this example
also has the optional electric sunroof. Underneath the iconic
whale-tail spoiler, lies the engine that cemented these little
German sports car's place in history. The boosted 3.3 liter in this
example is ready for the road or track, as it was recently treated
to an extensive service, with all service records available. While
this numbers-matching 930, in what many believe to be the most
eye-catching and desirable color, is a must-have for any
collection, it also begs to be driven. Take it home and you can do
both!
