For Sale: 1978 Ford Mustang II Cobra in Woodway, Texas

Vehicle Description

This is the 1978 Mustang II Cobra, V8 302 that has been in my family since the day it came off the showroom floor in Houston, Texas. My mother purchased it when I was in high school and later passed it on to me, so my son would have a car to drive when he turned 16. At the time it was purchased, it was black and had all of the decals that the Cobras had back then. After fifteen years, my mother decided she did not like the decals and black color so, sometime in 1993, she had it stripped and painted red.

I got the car in 1998, the motor had seen better days and I knew the red paint had to go. I had a local auto mechanic, who was known for mustang restoration in Waco, agree to take her on as a project. She occupied his project bay at his shop for over three months. He said he would keep as many of the original parts he could, but the motor would have to come rebuilt out of Kansas (I have the original paperwork on the rebuilt motor). She has been running like a charm ever since. Finally in January, 2008 I took her to the local paint and body shop to have her restored to her natural color. I was blown away at the work they had done. Although I was able to find a set of the original decals that were on the vehicle, I never had the balls to put them on, as the black was just too grand.

Condition notes: Rust is not a problem as the car has always been in Texas (no road salt). Transmission is original and I have kept it in good working order. The back inside panels were painted; however, they didn’t withstand the abuse from a high schooler’s back pack, instrument case, and various other sporting items and I never got around to repainting them, so they need some work. The paint on the back bumper began to crack a few years ago and will need to be repainted. The dash has a fitted plastic cover over the original dash, as the original had signs of aging. The AC worked a few years ago but the compressor went out and I never bothered to spend the money to get it fixed. The driver’s side door’s arm rest has a small crack in the material. The rest of the interior is in good condition and is original.

When I got her in 1998, from my mother, the motor had 105,000 miles on it. In June of 2003 I had the new motor put in when she had 114,500 miles. Today she has 132,626 so the new motor has 18,126 miles. I run her every other Sunday for about 20 miles round trip and then she goes back into the garage. This has been the routine for the past ten years. The decals I have were purchased from a mustang website that had a box of the original decals but he did not guarantee the condition of those decals. They were in pretty rough shape so I put them into a storage tote and slipped them under a bed in our house for safe keeping. The decal kit was missing one of the side decals so it is not the full set. The new motor was purchased from Four Star Engine out of Hutchinson Kansas. The MFG# is 862118 and the type is F5540AL. I have included pictures of the original rims with the accessories I have remaining on those rims. I have also attached a photo of the VIN Plate that is found under the hood; it is hard to read so I have transferred the numbers and letters onto a piece of paper in the photo. You will notice the front bumper is missing the center liner strip. I have that and it just needs the bumper cleaned up and reattached with some strong adhesive.

Some of the most recent repairs I have done to her in the last five years are: Installed a new gas tank; new rack & pinion steering; new fuel pump; new radiator; new thermostat, and new tires. The driver’s side seat has been reupholstered and I installed new carpet throughout. In 2005 I installed all new KYB GR-2 Gas Shock Absorbers to help with the smooth ride.

For nearly 40 years she has been driven and cared for by one family. The reason I have decided to sell her now is that I bought property and need to refocus my energies (and garage space) on a vehicle that can be driven off-road. She needs a new home with someone who will continue to appreciate her uniqueness as a Mustang II Cobra, V8 302. I have posted many pictures so you can see nearly every inch of her and welcome any questions.
