Launched for 1976 and produced through 1986, the CJ-7 represented the ultimate evolution of the basic go-anywhere, do-anything Jeep a derivation of GP General Purpose of World War II fame. With its development rooted in the original CJ or Civilian Jeep, which Willys-Overland initiated in 1944 when Allied victory was all but certain, the Jeep was relentlessly developed, improved, and virtually perfected through successive generations under four corporate parents, progressing from Willys through Kaiser, then American Motors, and finally Chrysler.
Possessing great maneuverability and the ability to traverse the most forbidding terrains imaginable, the civilian CJ and its military counterparts carried an unbeatable image and attracted an exceptionally loyal following over the following decades. Development and improvement was relentless throughout CJ production. In addition, the Jeep gained its own unique brand status and went on to immense sales success worldwide in all of its various forms and models.
As the CJ-7 Jeeps approached the end of their production life, the extended-wheelbase CJ-8 version, debuted in 1981. Featuring a 103-inch wheelbase and a removable half-cab allowing closed or open configurations, the CJ-8 offered plenty of style and utility in one convenient package. The CJ-8 is best-known as the Scrambler based on the appearance package displayed on many CJ-8s. A CJ-8 was owned by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and used by him on his California ranch. The Alaskan branch of the U.S. Postal Service also used a right-hand-drive, automatic-transmission version of the CJ-8, which included a full-length steel hardtop and a barn door opening at the rear. A slightly revised version sold widely in Australia and Venezuela. Only an approximate 28,000 CJ-8s were produced through 1986.
This 1982 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler was found on Willie Nelson's ranch in Texas and the glove box was signed by Willie Nelson himself. Features include a White and Tan interior, AMC 6-cylinder engine, 4-speed transmission, 4-wheel drive, new tires, and a spare tire.
