Vehicle Description

1967 Volvo P1800S

In the late 50's, Volvo wanted a sports car to compete in the US and European markets so they created the P1900. This failed attempt resulted with only 68 cars sold. Volvo then turned to Karmann but that deal fell through due to conflicts with other manufacturers so at one point it seemed the idea for the P1800 would never become a reality. Luckily in 1960 Volvo joined up with Jensen Motors who worked with them to produce P1800s for release in 1961 and the public was ready. This model proved to be much more popular and remained in production until the early 70s. In 1963 production moved from Jensen due to quality control issues and Volvo started producing them in their own plant in Sweden. This is where the P1800S was born, S for Sweden. From there the engine was upgraded but the sporty exterior look remained. The 1967 P1800S model you see here is a nice original car that has lived with 1 family since being purchased new in San Pedro, California. In 1990 the original owner gave the car to his Brother who then passed it along to his daughter in 2000. The car has been kept mostly original since new and being in 1 family a lot of this is easy to confirm since the current owner can recall seeing the car when it belonged to her uncle many years ago. The car is coated in the original Dark Green paint that in certain light (and some of the pictures) almost looks Black. All of the original chrome/stainless work is in place, including the fender mounted mirrors and all of it appears to have a nice shine. It rides on the original wheels and hubcaps that are wrapped with fresh tires.

Powering the car is the famous B18 4 cylinder overhead valve motor with dual carbs. A few years ago the car was sent to Sawyers Vintage shop where the motor was entirely rebuilt. Since there isn't a huge market for reproduction Volvo parts finding the different components proved to be difficult so a lot of the engine internals were custom built from scratch by a machine shop in Kansas. Since being completed the motor has less than 1,000 miles on it. It runs extremely well and is a really fun car to drive. These motors are known for their durability and 1 of the highest mileage cars in the world is a 66 P1800S with its original motor that has racked up about 3,000,000 miles. Paired with the motor is the original manual transmission that moves through the gears with no issues. The car is fitted with factory overdrive as well as factory AC.

The interior features Black in the carpet and dash with the upholstery work all done in Tan. It is in good shape and utilizes mostly factory components. The only after market add ons are the radio and a separate gauge pod for oil/temp/amp. The corresponding original gauges are in place as well but not functioning. The standard 2+2 layout for the seats is in place and considering it is a sports car there is plenty of room inside. The trunk of the car provides additional storage and the bottom of the rear seat is also removable for even more storage space if needed. The original spare is still in the trunk along with the original jack set up.

The car comes with all of the available past registration, service bills, owners manual and warranty slips. These old Volvos had a great look and are very unique. When you talk sports cars people don't immediately think about Volvos but show them one in person and they are always impressed.
