Launched to popular acclaim in 1926 and immediately respected for delivering the excellent styling of GMs design studios and outstanding value for the money Pontiac remains one of the most appealing American cars throughout its existence. Positioned between Chevrolet and Buick within Alfred P. Sloans GM automobile hierarchy Pontiac offered a multitude of body styles and strong powertrains that heightened its popularity; however few of its early cars survive today. Fewer still today are Pontiac-based street rods. Of them this example from 1931 - best known as The Poncho is one of the best. Built in Arizona and remaining there to enjoy the states dry climate ever since it was completed The Poncho proudly retains its steel 2-door Sedan body mildly tweaked with a filled roof and modern custom tail lights. Striking Purple custom paint tri-color accent striping and polished wheels enhance the vehicles presence. Further highlights include factory headlamps a chromed grille full running boards cowl lights and full fenders. A lowered Mustang II independent front suspension provides a great stance. Underneath that louvered hood The Poncho is equipped with a 350 small-block V-8 engine dressed with polished and chromed goodies that sounds nice with a cam and Edelbrock carburetor among its many bolt-on upgrades. A serpentine belt system drives the engine-powered accessories including an air conditioner supplied by Vintage Air. A new radiator keeps the healthy engine running nice and cool. The spacious interior compartment is fully customized and inviting throughout from the custom dash useful gauges modern steering column and floor-mounted shifter to the front buckets and rear bench seat. The door panels and headliner trimmed with sweeping insert stripes tie it all together. Built with all new parts while maintaining its handsome original body The Poncho is sure to draw crowds everywhere it goes while delivering an outstanding cruising experience with room for friends and family
