Vehicle Description
1953 XK120 Special Equipment Roadster LHD
This delightful Jaguar was constructed on 6th February of 1953 and
sold via Hornburg of Los Angeles to its first owner a Mr Carlin O
Schaeffer later that spring.
Being a special equipment car it came fitted from the factory with
wire wheels and sported twin exhausts, higher lift cams and an 8:1
compression engine, delivering 180 bhp versus the 160 bhp of the
standard model. It was originally finished in Battleship Grey paint
with Biscuit and Red interior and a Black hood.
Unusually for an exported car, the history of this particular
example is very well known, primarily because it remained in single
family ownership for the vast majority of its 63 years. The most
recent owner, a Mr Ken Purchase, bought the car in 1959, at which
time it was Black, and over the next 57 years he had it repainted
twice, initially in Pastel Blue Metallic and latterly in Old
English White as part of a ten year bare-metal chassis off
restoration, which was completed in 2013. Since that time the car
has been shown at a number of concours events in the United States
before being repatriated to the UK in 2016. Having benefitted from
many years in a favourable climate and with little use since its
concours-standard restoration it currently presents in excellent
condition with chrome wire wheels, Old English White paint, Red
leather interior and Tan hood.
Retaining its matching number engine yet benefitting from a new
five speed gearbox it provides an excellent opportunity to obtain a
very useable XK120 roadster finished to its original and desirable
special equipment specification and would be eligible for the Mille
Miglia with minimal work. It is offered with a good history file
with numerous invoices, restoration photographs and original
handbook and in view of its long term ownership has exceptional
provenance.
