For Sale at Auction: 1932 Buick Series 50 in Concord, North Carolina
1932 Buick 57S Special 5-Passenger Sedan- One of 9,766 "S"-Series upgrade Buicks built in 1932, and featured the first-year "Silent Second Sycro-Mesh" transmission. All S-Series models were richly appointed with stylish, chrome-trimmed instruments--speedometer, fuel, oil, water and ammeter--set in walnut woodgrained panels with mohair fabric throughout, or "grey whipcord of new design." An optional clock was set either in the rearview mirror or in the matching walnut glovebox door. Again, the 57S received added luxury items such as a rear seat assist cord, folding robe rail, ash receivers and a chrome folding rear footrest. Power is a "straight" 8 cylinder 230ci, 79HP engine.
This particular example is from the S. Truett Cathy Collection. The late Mr. Cathy was the founder and owner of the famous Chick-Fil-A Restaurants. According to his museum curator, Mr. Cathy loved this Buick and it was featured in the antique auto collection displayed in the foyer of the corporate headquarters in Atlanta until some of Mr. Cathy's cars were sold to benefit charity in May 2016. Mr. Cathy purchased this car from Mr. George Glass, who is also an Atlanta collector.
This striking Buick is correctly finished in Hawaiian Tan with dark Brown fenders and trim, and a dark maroon interior. It has the "artillery-style" wheels and dual side mounts. We think it should remain in a museum, but that will be the new owners' prerogative.
The car was in the above-mentioned collection on display for as much as 10 years without running. Since being removed from the corporate foyer, it has 4 new tires, new battery, and the engine has been tuned and serviced. Offered for sale at TOM MACK CAROLINA-IN-JANUARY AUCTION, January 14, 2017, Cabarrus County Arena & Event Center, Concord, NC. www.tommackauctions.com
