Unimog is a range of multi-purpose all-wheel drive medium trucks produced by Mercedes-Benz, a division of Diamler AG. The name Unimog is a German acronym for "Universal-Motor-Device (Gerat). The first model was designed shortly after World War II to be used in agriculter as a self-propelled machine providing a power-take off to operate saws in the forest or harvesting machines on fields. It was designed with permanent all-wheel drive, with equal-size wheels, in order to be driven on roads at higher speeds than standard tractors. With their very high ground clearance and a flexible frame that is essentially a part of the suspension, Unimogs are ready to conquer any terrain. Due to their off road capabilities, Unimogs can be found in jungles, mountains, and deserts as military vehicles, fire fighters and expedition campers. In Western Europe, they are commonly used as snowplows, municipal implements, forest ranger vehicles, construction equipment and are ready to tackle any job. The 1979 Mercedes MB 4/94 Unimog 406 presented was sold new in the US through Case Machinery. The truck comes complete with its dependable and proven 346 CID direct injection diesel, 6-cylinder Mercedes Benz engine that features easy starting, high torque and low fuel consumption. Power is transferred through the optional synchromesh transmission featuring 20 forward gears and 8 reverse gears, and applied to the 4 wheels with Portal-type axles to provide ground terrain travel and to maintain a low center of gravity. Other highlights include: front and rear hydraulics, front central and rear PTO, 3-point hitch, dual bucket seats, power steering, 4 Wheel air over hydraulic brakes, hand throttle, and steel roll roof. Today at just 26094 miles on the odometer, the vehicle remains highly original with the exception of new paint on cab, frame and chassis and diamond plate accents. Mechanically, the engine, transmission and all systems of this Unimog have been completely gone through, checked and serviced accordingly as well as 4 new large Military grade run-flat tires.
