Vehicle Description
Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher's partnership began as they
were two engineers working at Daimler-Benz performance division
developing a 300 SE racing engine. When the program was
discontinued, Aufrecht and Melcher set up shop at Aufrecht's home
in Grossaspach, W. Germany. Their shared passion for mortorsport
and the Mercedes brand compelled them to continue to hone the
performance of the 300 SE engine until colleague Manfred Schiek,
drove one of their 300 SE engines to the German Touring Car
Championship in 1965 with 10 victories. With this, Aufrecht and
Melcher of Grossaspach, quickly gained reputation for sustaining
and optimizing the performance of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and the
AMG brand was born and by the early 70's the news of the success of
the brand spread throughout the motorsports world. Since, AMG
continued to independently build performance engines and AMG became
more and more associated with Mercedes-Benz products until 1993
when Mercedes Benz unveiled the C 36 AMG, the first jointly
developed vehicle and solidifying the merger between Mercedes-Benz
and AMG.
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this outstanding,
"Pre-Merger" 1990 Mercedes Benz SL500 6.0 liter as one of the only
three hundred fifty SL based examples built by, then still
independent tuner, AMG for the world market. The car was originally
built by AMG as a 6.0 liter using MB's 5.0 liter engine as a
starting point. AMG increased the displacement by a full liter and
added 54 horsepower for a total of 376 before the car being sold
new to the performance savvy Japanese market. The car was imported
to the US after having two owners in Japan. Today, at 59192
kilometers (just 36780 miles) the car remains in excellent original
condition throughout. The dark grey metallic paint remains
excellent in all areas showing less than normal wear for the age
and miles, the full leather interior also has with stood the test
of time and still shows wonderful in all areas. The car is powered
by its original AMG prepared 6.0 liter V8 engine, 4 speed automatic
transmission and rear wheel drive. The car still retains its
correct AMG bodywork including the deep chin spoiler, side skirts,
rear bumper as well as an integrated three-piece trunk spoiler.
Other highlights include: factory hard top, updated 18 inch AMG
wheels, blacked out badging and emblems, and upgraded radio. The
performance of this car is amazing as on our test drive the car
demonstrated its keen ability to deliver refined German performance
that excites the most performance minded drivers.
This 1990 Mercedes-Benz SL500 AMG 6.0 is special and one of the
best remaining examples in today's market. This pre-merger AMG
represents a commitment to excellence that blossomed to todays top
factory performance program. AMG has built chapters in automotive
history and early pre-merger examples remain in high demand from
around the globe. For these reasons, the value of this example is
destined to dramatically rise in the coming years. The car is turn
key and ready for immediate enjoyment as well as become a staple in
your investment portfolio.
