MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to offer this 1976 Excalibur Phaeton Series III. The previous owner lovingly drove this car for four years and now it's ready for a new home. This is truly one of the nicest Excalibur we have ever seen. Designer Brooks Stevens took the Excalibur tradition that stretched back to hand-built sports cars in the early 50s and shifted into road-going cars with the Series 1 Excalibur in 1965. The road-going Excalibur combined a coachbuilt fiberglass body that harkened back to the classic 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK with modern underpinnings for contemporary ride and performance. At first, Studebaker served as the chassis and power-train component of the Excalibur with subsequent Chevrolet V-8 power. The Series II Excalibur used Chevrolet Corvette-spec engines in conjunction with a ladder-bar frame until 1975, when big-block Chevrolet power combined with a new chassis that brought a 112-inch wheelbase marked as the advent of the Series III. This rarely seen Excalibur Series III is one of just 173 phaetons built for 1976 and is finished in two-tone red-over-black paint with a luxurious tan interior to bolster its neo-classic style. The 454-cubic-inch big-block V-8 under the bonnet features a polished intake manifold topped with a four-barrel carburetor with signature dual side exhaust for performance and style. The engine is backed by an automatic transmission with tilt-column power steering and power brakes with ventilated front discs for near-effortless road handling. Its exterior is in very good condition, with only minor blemishes visible on the left front fender. The windshield is in fine form under its triple windshield wiper blades. The car's lights are clear and crack-free and the chrome wire wheels with spinner center caps are in great condition. All of the vehicle's body panels are straight and the engine bay is very tidy. The sweeping lines of the coachbuilt body are accented by a chrome front grille with Excalibur ornament and chrome rear taillight housings. Dual side-mount spares with rearview mirror covers back up chrome wire wheels with wide whitewall tires. Quad air horns help let inattentive drivers know you're driving an Excalibur. The car is equipped with a fully removable factory fiberglass top with tan button-down side curtains with flexible window panels. Inside, the matching tan seats and carpet contrast nicely with the exterior. The bucket seats are in excellent shape, as is the carpet and instrument panel. The car has a black, Corvette three-spoke steering wheel and transmission console. Air conditioning and an Alpine CD stereo provide comfort and entertainment while a full complement of Stewart Warner gauges allow for an eye on velocity. Many celebrities have owned Excaliburs, including Bill Cosby, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Dick Van Dyke, Tony Curtis, Shirley Jones, Sonny and Cher, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Roberto Duran and Paul Harvey. One of the most enthusiastic owners was Phyllis Diller - she purchased four of them. The former king, Juan Carlos I of Spain, was another customer. Competition to this Excalibur in 1976 included Cadillac's Eldorado Convertible, Bentley's Corniche Convertible and Mercedes-Benz's 450 SL Convertible. This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 64,325 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, actual mileage title.
