There's just something about old school pickups that's universally
appealing. To us, they're clean, straightforward manifestations of
the best aspects of classic car ownership. And it seems many
enthusiasts agree, as trucks like this unique Dodge have quickly
become some of our hottest sellers. Mixing a stroked BluePrint V8
and tough TorqueFlite 3-speed with a custom chassis and
show-stopping bodywork, this road-ready warrior is worthy of EVERY
gearhead's full attention. If you're looking for a professionally
built custom that highlights purposeful simplicity with acute
detailing, take a close look at this impressive D100!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Fully sorted and ready to roll, this super cool pickup recently
received a professional, frame-off restoration that was completed
by Lakeside Rods and Rides of Rockwell City, Iowa. As you can tell
from our high-resolution photos, that first class build is
highlighted by a smooth combination of glossy Ford Mineral Gray and
Matte Tectonic Silver 2-stage. Under that high quality PPG pigment,
an incredibly straight fuselage hangs solid panels that, apart from
a thorough massage during the aforementioned reboot, appear to have
led a quiet, drama-free existence. Those massaged panels feature
better-than-factory alignment and, when opened and closed, function
exceptionally well. And that functional body's combination of
excellent reflections and Kansas-flat surfaces suggests many
labor-intensive hours were spent exacting top-notch finish
work.
Produced between 1961 and 1980, the Dodge D Series was the
precursor to today's much loved Ram. This 1965 D Series is a member
of what MoPar enthusiasts affectionately call the Sweptline family;
a nickname that becomes pretty self-explanatory upon noticing the
pickup's sculpted profile. At the front of the truck, a chromed
grille centers a custom "408" emblem between a mirrored bumper,
clean parking lamps and desirable quad headlights that were phased
out the following model year. Above that grille, a "DODGE" branded
hood rolls toward smoked glass that cased in stemmed mirrors,
polished wipers and an attractive matte roof. At the sides of that
hood, the truck's sweeping profile founds polished door handles and
a color-keyed fuel filler behind more, bold "DODGE" lettering. At
the center of that profile, a matte finished bed founds a custom
floor around a vintage, pinstriped trunk. And at the back of that
bed, a second mirrored bumper reflects clean lights, wrapped chains
and a "DODGE" stamped tailgate.
ENGINE
Toss the hood and you'll find a trusty Chrysler 360 that, thanks to
the pros at Kearney, Nebraska's BluePrint Engines, has been stroked
to 408 cubic inches. At the top of that delightfully painted mill,
a 2-tone, dual-snorkel air cleaner feeds oxygen in to a coated
Edelbrock carburetor, which is seated on an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap
intake. At the sides of that intake, Magnum cylinder heads brandish
painted, "408" branded valve covers. Fires get lit by a color-keyed
distributor, which jolts loomed Taylor plug wires. Cooling comes
courtesy of a matte PRC radiator, which rides between a big puller
fan and a pinstriped expansion tank. Spent gases exit through
plated Chrysler manifolds. A Billet Specialties Tru Trac accessory
drive spins a color-keyed water pump between a polished AC
compressor and a polished alternator. And the truck's matte engine
compartment is very well done, with items like trick dipsticks,
braided fluid lines and a familiar Wilwood master cylinder rounding
out an otherwise impressive build.
DRIVETRAIN/TRANSMISSION
Judging by appearance, this classic spent most of its blue-collar
life living clean and working hard. So, when the time came for
rebirth, the truck was a prime candidate for thorough
modernization. Nowhere is that theme more evident than under the
skin. The dressed and stroked 360 sends power to a proven A727
3-speed which, perched on a Fat Man crossmember, spins a trusty
Ford axle. That smooth drivetrain pushes a custom 4-link
suspension, which sports fresh Ridetech air bags. Tracking is
provided by an upgraded front clip, which is fitted with tubular
control arms, power rack-and-pinion steering and two more Ridetech
bags. Quick stops are a cinch thanks to retrofitted power front
disc and rear drum brakes. At the center of the floor, aluminized
exhaust pipes make good use of throaty turbo mufflers. And at the
corners of the chassis, custom US Mags Heavy Artillery wheels twist
245/45R18 Falken Ziex radials in front of 275/40R20 Falken Ziex
radials.
INTERIOR
When you pop this pickup's doors, you'll find a comfortable cockpit
that, thanks to Weber's Custom Interiors of Alexandria, Minnesota,
features stylish cowhide accents. Top dead center, a painted dash
hangs custom Dakota Digital analog telemetry opposite under-dash
air conditioning. In front of that dash, a plush leather seat backs
a custom console, which floats on beige carpet that's protected by
piped and color-keyed floor mats. At the sides of that rug, simple
door panels hang polished handles over small storage bags that are
finished with cowhide accents. Above those panels, a custom cowhide
headliner frames color-keyed sun visors. And in front of the
driver, a tilting column spins a 1956 Oldsmobile steering wheel
around a polished gear selector.
