Grand Turismo Omologato or GTO was the idea of John DeLorean, Chief engineer for Pontiac at the time. The name was inspired by the ever so successful Ferrari race car, the 250 GTO. Others say that the name stood for "Grand Tempest Option".
No matter where the name derived, there is no doubt that the GTO is one of those models that stands out as being one of the leaders in the Muscle Car wars of the 1960's and 70's.
By 1967 which was still amongst the first generation of cars underwent a few styling changes which the louvered tail lights were replaced with eight individual lights: four on each side and Rally II wheels with colored lug nuts were also available. Mechanical changes included the demise of the 389 to a larger stroke 400 cubic inch and a 4-barrell carb vs the Tri-Power set up offering three different variants of horsepower and torque ranges.
This is a very exciting GTO we are offering here today. It is a Fremont California built car that still wears all of its original CA smog pump and emission controls which is very rare considering most of them were stripped and thrown in the garbage back then. This is a dealer installed air car that was delivered new to Miami FL. The Burgundy paint color is original to the car with a re-paint some 30 years ago. The consignor has owned this car since the mid-1980's where it has been used as a very occasional summer driver. This very important car comes with Pontiac Historic Documents, a copy of the build sheet, Protect-O-Plate and owners manual.
This car starts up immediately, burns nothing and drips nothing. She goes down the road and shifts through the gears as it should. The beautiful Burgundy paint still shows very well and there is no rot underneath any-where. This is a fantastic car that is ready for anything.
