Dodge was striving to compete with the full sized Chevrolets of this era after their own vehicles were downsized. In 1965, all Chrysler full-size cars, which rode on the same basic chassis, were dubbed “C” bodies. The basic body dates from earlier years, but the terminology was applied for the first time in 1965. The C-bodies were upper range large cars setup with torsion bar front suspensions, rear leaf springs, long hoods to accommodate big block engines, and TorqueFlite automatic transmissions. For 1965, Chrysler moved the Dodge 880 back to a Chrysler “C” full size platform that was shared with Chrysler and Plymouth models and became Dodge’s top-of-the-line model which replaced the Polara. The 1965 Custom 880 was a higher trim level than the Plymouth Polara, and included all the features of the Polara plus air foam front seats and stainless steel rocker panels.
