The Dodge 880 and Custom 880 were variants of the 1962 Chrysler Newport that were sold only for a few short years, from 1962 to 1965. Dodge was striving to compete with the full sized Chevrolets of this era after their own vehicles were downsized.
In 1965, all Chrysler full-size cars, which rode on the same basic chassis, were dubbed “C” bodies. The basic body dates from earlier years, but the terminology was applied for the first time in 1965. The C-bodies were upper range large cars setup with torsion bar front suspensions, rear leaf springs, long hoods to accommodate big block engines, and TorqueFlite automatic transmissions.
For 1965, Chrysler moved the Dodge 880 back to a Chrysler “C” full size platform that was shared with Chrysler and Plymouth models and became Dodge’s top-of-the-line model which replaced the Polara. The 1965 Custom 880 was a higher trim level than the Plymouth Polara, and included all the features of the Polara plus air foam front seats and stainless steel rocker panels.
Masterpiece is proud to present an exceptionally straight, and great daily driving survivor of this very rare and original MOPAR era. Our 1965 Dodge Custom 880 Convertible with the highly desirable era correct 383ci 4BBL 315HP engine with dual exhaust, factory power steering and power brakes! It is one of some reported 1,416 Custom 880 Convertible models built in ’65 and the top-of-the-line model for Dodge. The newly designed Polara moved upmarket to take the place of the prior 880 line and expanded to include 2 Door hardtop and Convertible models. The Custom 880 continued as an upper trim level Polara model and included all the features of the Polara plus air foam front seats. They used the slogan "If elegance were spelled in numbers, this would be it!" to promote this car.
This vehicle came from a collection of well-maintained southern classics and is accident free and a true survivor car with one repaint! The cars original color was tan and repainted to bright red. The black interior is original but sports new era correct carpeting.
The flagship model for the Dodge line-up in 1965 was the Custom 880 and with only some 1,416 convertibles produced makes any survivors from this era very rare and would make this car a prized asset to any dedicated Dodge or MOPAR collection. The era correct 383/315HP 4 BBL V8 engine runs strong and this car drives well - must be driven to be appreciated - does not miss a beat and purrs like a kitten - drives straight as an arrow with no strange road wobbles, shakes or rattles - a truly remarkable daily driver that will give any modern-day car a run for its money!
With very few remaining Custom 880 Convertible's left, this is an extremely unusual opportunity to own a great daily driving example of this rare and very desirable original 1965 Dodge Custom 880 '6 passenger' Convertible with the big block 383/315HP engine and power steering and power brakes in good condition.
