The respected BMW 635CSi M was introduced at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. Like all 6 Series, the 635CSi M and the American-bound M6 were built on the normal Dingolfing assembly line, with body shells shipped from the Karmann works in Osnabruck. As with all of their cars, BMW grasps the pure nature of performance itself. It is just not road-holding prowess or a machine's agility through the corners, or the acceleration to top speed, but the sum of all of these working in concert. Like all BMWs, the 635CSi M isn't so much the sum of its parts as the perfect balance of them.
All examples of the BMW Motorsport-developed E24 6 Series coupes are officially designated as the 635CSi M. However, in both North America and Japan, they were known and badged as the "M6", both to simplify the name and to bring it in line with the other M models, specifically the M3 and M5.
The European spec 635CSi M is powered by a 3.5-liter, 282-hp twin-cam, 24-valve inline six-cylinder engine known as the M88, which was derived from those used in the fabled BMW M1 sports car. They also feature a revised chassis and several unique cosmetic items.
Sources indicate that approximately 3,400 of the left-hand drive versions of this European spec car were built from February 1984 to December 1988. In total, five different versions of the car were built; the various versions were European/left-hand drive without catalyst; European/right-hand drive without catalyst; European/left-hand drive with catalyst; North American/left-hand drive with catalyst and Japan/left-hand drive with catalyst.
Reported in largely original condition; the former owner is said to have rebuilt the M88 engine at approximately 130,000 miles. The odometer is displayed in miles and these are stated to be original to the car and now reads over 165,000. Changes to the car include the different wheels, new tires and the radio is also non-factory spec. The current owner conveys that this BMW 635CSi M has been regularly serviced and maintained by “a BMW/Porsche racecar specialist in Beaufort, South Carolina.” The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission.
The BMW is accompanied by a large three-ring binder of documents, spare parts (including air conditioning compressor which was removed) and a set of tires. Among the equipment onboard is a radio, aftermarket wheels, front air dam, rear spoiler, bucket seats, center console; power windows, steering and four-wheel disc brakes. The car appears to be well used and exhibits wear commensurate with being enjoyed for many years.
