1978 Corvette Pace Car Edition For Sale - Documented 259 Miles, L82 Engine, Fully Doc'd LMC is proud to offer for sale this 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car Edition By 1978, the Chevrolet Corvette had already been in production for 25 years which is much longer than most models and once again the Corvette was honored to pace the famous Indy 500. Chevrolet took the opportunity to commemorate the Anniversary event with a spectacular Pace Car Edition. Since Chevrolet had 6,200 dealers at the time, the decision to build a special limited edition so that each showroom could have at least one. Today they have become quite sought after in the collector world with only 6,502 being produced, and only approximately 25% of those coming with the L82 pushing 220HP. L-82 engines were also now fitted with an aluminum intake manifold which saved 24 pounds compared to the cast iron unit of previous years. Performance was confirmed by Road & Track taking a 1978 L82 to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds, 127 mph flat out and covered the quarter-mile in 15.3 seconds and 95 mph. Indy-500 Pace cars featured Black/Metallic Silver two-tone paint which was first two-tone paint option offered by Corvette since 1961. Other features were the unique front and rear spoilers, polished aluminum Red-stripe wheels, mirror-tint roof panels and special “clam shell” contoured sport seats finished in Silver Leather. An Indianapolis 500 decal kit was also included. The most spectacular new design styling was the “fastback” rear end having a large rear window, reminiscent of the lines of the mid-'60s, that was beneficial for both aerodynamics and increased usable luggage space while improving rearward visibility. Other desirable options include air conditioning, power windows and door locks, tilt-telescopic steering column, AM/FM/CB radio, cruise control, and polished-aluminum wheels with the Red Trim Line. Some cars are destined to be collector cars. They are produced in limited quantities, some to commemorate achievements of a brand or model, some are standalone models and others are special packages available to make them unique. This 1978 Pace Car has a remarkable 259 original miles since being delivered new to Molye Chevrolet Inc in Honeoye Falls, NY on May 20th, 1978 from the St Louis Plant. Finished just as all Corvette Pace Cars were, this car showcases its factory Black paint with Silver trim and Red Pin Striping. The interior has its original Silver/Smoke Leather Bucket that is still like brand new. This car is equipped with the rare and desirable numbers matching L82 350 engine with an Automatic Transmission. This Corvette has the factory polished aluminum wheels and Goodyear Eagle GTII Tires. It is fully loaded with features including Power Steering, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Tilt/Telescopic Steering Wheel, T-Top Smoked Glass Roof Panels, Air Conditioning and Cruise Control as well it is equipped with the unique optional FE7 Gymkhana suspension. This Corvette Pace Car has been Collector Owned, very well maintained since day one and with that amazing low mileage it certainly is in beautiful condition throughout – exterior, interior and undercarriage. This car is fully documented with the MSO copy, dealer order sheet, dealer order receipt, original build sheet, original window sticker, original delivery documents, previous service documents, original warranty documents, old photos, dealer invoice, odometer disclosure statements, service records, previous titles and previous bills of sale all documenting the mileage. At Concours events nationwide “Preservation Classes” have been added to showcase well preserved and mostly unrestored, un-refinished, and unaltered cars. In "Hagerty's Cars That Matter" they observed unrestored cars sell for prices that would have astonished in the recent past.
