1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 Cobra Jet in Halton Hills, Ontario
1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 CJ For Sale - Can Am Champ Award Car, 1
of 1, Fully Documented Legendary Motorcar is very proud to offer
for sale this 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 Cobra Jet. In 1969 the
muscle car war was in full swing. Wishing to remain competitive and
sell more cars the Lincoln Mercury division of Ford Motor Company
came up with a slogan for 1969 to push a sportier image. This
advertising strategy was coined the "Streep Scene", meaning the
combination of "street and strip". This theme was to join the 1969
Mercury model line up through the USA auto show circuit that year.
With its Mustang under pinnings the cougar led the performance
portfolio, and with certain options selected it could be a terror
on the street or strip. Mercury was still a more upmarket car
catering to a different clientele than the Mustang ever would.
Keeping this ideal but injecting performance resulted the offering
of the 428 Cobra Jet engine as well as the XR-7 luxury equipment
package. When combined with a Convertible body style mercury was
able to offer a grand touring, luxurious convertible in the
tradition of the world's best GT convertibles. Full of style and
presence, loaded with luxuries, and more than enough Jam to deal
with any number of posers at the traffic light. The 1969 Mercury
Cougar XR-7 with 428 CJ Ram Air led the way for those looking for a
more refined muscle car experience. This 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 CJ
428 is significant in multiple ways. Being an XR7 package car, it
is already rare, but with the 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air engine, it
becomes one of only 127 ever built. After you factor in paint code,
interior trim, top color, transmission, and air conditioning, this
Cougar becomes 1 of only 1 ever produced. To make this Cougar even
more special, it was taken on a trial run at Laguna Seca by none
other than Dan Gurney. This 1969 Cougar is also a verified Can AM
Racing Champion Award car, by proof of the dealer invoice being an
internal sale with the special notation at the bottom reading "Can
Am Champ Award". This Cougar has benefited from a complete nut and
bolt, no expense spared restoration by a recognized Cougar expert
and shows today as beautiful and correct as it was when it left the
factory. The paint shines and shows beautifully while the interior
is essentially brand new. The underside, under close inspection,
one will see the great lengths and attention the car received
during the restoration. Proper red oxide primer with body color
overspray, fresh hardware, paint dabs, chalk markings and stickers
are all present. The power top zips up and down like it did the day
after completion, and the power steering and brakes make this
Cougar a dream to drive. The automatic transmission is effortless
and smooth and of course, the 428 Cobra Jet engine powers and
shouts like brand new as well. Simply put, there is no other 1969
Mercury Cougar XR7 428 CJ like this one. This is a very special one
of one car that was also the Can Am Champion Award car. With a
connection to Dan Gurney, this Cougar becomes even more special and
likely the most important and collectible of any. This is an
extremely unique, rare, and desired muscle car complete with full
documentation and in outstanding restored condition. Additional
