is pleased to present another Chevrolet Big Block Muscle Car in the
form of this 1966 Chevelle SS396 Sport Coupe. Make no mistake, this
is a muscle car; big block power, 4 on the floor and it has no
air-conditioning, no power steering or power brakes. The vivid red
paints fit and finish is second to none with a highly detailed
engine bay and gleaming under carriage that must bee seen!
Assembled in General Motors' factory in Atlanta, Georgia, the car
went through a frame-off restoration at some point. Overall, the
red paint is in good shape, with just a few blemishes noticeable at
close range. The glass panels are in good condition, as are most of
the lights. The car rolls on factory wheel covers that are in
overall good shape and wrapped within Goodyear Viva tires, size
215/75R15. The body panels are all straight. The engine bay and
floor pan are very tidy and the battery appears new. Under the hood
is a 396 CID L34 V-8 engine buttoned to a four-speed Muncie manual
transmission with a Hurst shift lever topped by a white ball. In
back is a 3.73 rear end and many new parts - aluminized dual
exhausts, gas tank, brakes lines and rear shocks. Car also has new
many new front suspension pieces. In the trunk is the original GM
spare wheel mounted within its original Uniroyal tire. Inside, the
car's black front bucket seats are in good shape, as is the
matching carpet, headliner, dashboard, three-spoke steering wheel,
door panels, mirrors, console and shift lever. Rounding out the
interior is a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with cassette and four speakers.
The Chevelle Super Sport, orSSrepresented Chevrolet's entry into
themuscle carbattle. The Chevelle SS396 became a series of its
own in 1966 with style numbers 13817 and 13867. SS396 sport coupes
and convertibles used the same Malibu sport coupe and convertible
bodies with reinforced frames and revised front suspension:
higher-rate springs, recalibrated shocks, and thicker front
stabilizer bar, but with different exterior trim. They also had
simulated hood scoops, red-stripe tires, and bright trim moldings.
The performance engines available included three 396 CID V-8s.The
SS396 series lasted from 1966 through 1968 before being relegated
to an option package in 1969. The 1966 and 1967 model years were
the only two years of the 'strut back' two-door sport coupe with
its own style number, 17. 1966 saw a complete restyle of the
Chevelle on the previous frame that included smooth contours, a
broad new grille and bumper treatment, and curved side windows.
Bulging rear fender lines and a "flying buttress" roofline
(tunneled into the "C" pillar) were highlights of the '66 hardtops,
shared with other GM "A" body models. The new body reflected the
"Coke bottle" body shape that became the fad for American cars in
the mid-1960s. A four-door hardtop-styled Sport Sedan joined the
Malibu series. It was an attractive car and was offered through
1972, but never achieved the high-production figures as the
pillared sedan. Chevelles continued in 300, 300 Deluxe, and Malibu
trim. Available engines were a 327 CID V-8 instead of either of the
sixes, or the mid-level option, a 283 CID V-8. Judicious attention
to the options list could add a tachometer, mag-style wheel covers
and sintered-metallic brakes. Four-way power seats, a tissue
dispenser and cruise control were optional. Competing vehicles to
this car in 1966 included Ford's Fairlane and Plymouth's Belvedere
and to a lesser degree, Pontiac's Tempest, Oldsmobile's Cutlass and
Buick's Special. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!! This car is currently located
at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the
odometer shows 22,671 miles and is believed not to be actual. It is
sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title.
