For those that don't know, Desoto was a branch of the Chrysler
Corporation along with Dodge and Plymouth until its
discontinuation in the very early 1960's. That said, the Desoto
joins the ranks of Studebaker, Plymouth, AMC and Pontiac just
to name a few. All of the a fore mentioned including Desoto
are now considered what we in the classic car community refer
to as "Orphan cars". The best way to describe this Desoto
Custom Club Coupe is a "Nice original, well maintained car from
1949". Most every aspect of this Desoto from its original body
panels to its original tan interior, to its original drive-
train has been well taken care of for the last 68 years! The
car starts and runs very well as it's been kept tuned and
maintained. The "Fluid Drive" transmission shifts properly, and
along with the original 6 cylinder engine, this coupe travels
down the road nicely and rides very smoothly.
The paint, although showing some age as it's been on the car at
least 20 years, looks very nice and presentable, and appears to
have been a nice quality paint job. All of the chrome and
bright work look nice on the car and the doors open and close
easily. The trunk carries its original bias-ply spare, but the
tires on the ground are radials. The white wheel trim you see
were used at the time instead if unavailable white walls, which
is definitely unusual. This car has really aged quite nicely as
I can see no evidence of rust either in the body or the
undercarriage. The odometer shows 85,652 miles, and that is
believed to be original. Want a car that is rarely seen, even
at a car show? This car has somehow survived and maintained its
integrity throughout the years, and will give those within its
presence, a glimpse of a time we will never see again.
