The Mercedes-Benz chassis R107 models were produced from 1971 to 1989. This is reported to be one of the largest series of cars produced by an automotive manufacturer. The 280SL option was manufactured as a two-seat roadster with a folding soft-top as standard equipment; and a hardtop as optional equipment. This European specification 280SL is a rarely seen model in the U.S. This model was extremely desirable because American specification Mercedes had to be fully fitted with smog equipment, which hurt the horsepower output substantially. A 0- to 100-km/hr sprint was completed in 9.5 seconds; and a maximum speed was 205-kilometers per hour. For 1984, only 3,529 units were produced.
This Mercedes-Benz 280SL is powered by an inline six-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower. Backing this stout engine is a rare and desirable five-speed manual transmission. The advanced suspension under this motorcar features front and rear double wishbones. This Euro-spec model is tailored with a removable hardtop, air conditioning; power steering, brakes and windows. The exterior has European bumpers, excellent paintwork, factory wheels, chrome mirrors; and single headlamps, rather than the dual headlamps usually seen on American models. The interior is presented beautifully with leather upholstery, bucket seats, newer stereo unit and wool seat covers.
This is a rare and desirable model that does not come up for sale often; and its exceptional survivor condition make it even more desirable.
