When Jaguar introduced the XJS Convertible in 1988, it was an automotive event that was welcomed by Jaguar enthusiasts around the world. For many, the legendary E-Type represented the ultimate in open top motoring. Now the legend had been reborn in the form of the XJS Convertible. With the Jaguar marque enjoying great successes on racetracks during this period, the new model was expected to be a major focus of attention in the specialist car sector.
The XJS model had a 21-year production run that had the classic appeal of its predecessor. This 1989 version of the car continued in the tradition of a fast, refined, well-appointed and carefully detailed grand touring platform.
Reported as being a “California car,” this red with black interior example is powered by the always impressive 5,343-cc, 262-hp V-12 engine with the standard GM Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission. Interior fittings are luxurious and comprehensive. Top quality hides and burr walnut veneer is used extensively on the fascia panel, door cappings and console. Air conditioning was also a standard on this car, as were power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. Power steering, AM/FM radio, black convertible top boot, original books and polished lace-style alloy wheels also contribute to the appeal of this period world-class luxury import. The factory reported a top speed of approximately 145-mph and supplemented the enticement of this British standard.
