There would be no 2011 Viper. At a dealer conference in September 2010 in Orlando, Florida; Chrysler Group and Fiat Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne is said to have finished his remarks by presenting a 2012 Dodge Viper prototype. Quotes from the Detroit News from SRT CEO Ralph Gilles implied the future of the brand forwarded by the new Viper would not be based on anything else; that the Viper cockpit is placed rearward with a very long hood as few cars in this configuration were no longer offered and finally that "I want the new Viper to be a more forgiving car to drive and accessible to more people. We've never had stability control on a high-performance car, which is about to happen on the new car." This would also be the first Viper introduced with a fixed roof instead of a convertible or roadster configuration.
The Viper was also on display for one night only in Salt Lake City, Utah at the 11th Viper Owners Invitational from September 30, 2010 to October 3, 2010. The Generation 5 badge was unveiled at this same event; it would represent the Viper’s third logo and was nicknamed “Stryker.” In autumn of 2011, Ralph Gilles (then President and CEO of the SRT Brand and Senior Vice President of Design at Chrysler) announced that the Gen V 2013 SRT Viper would be unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
This limited production automobile would be offered with an all-aluminum 8.4-liter, 640-hp V-10 engine with 600-lb/ft torque rating that is matched to a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission with final drive ratio of 3.55:1. It was reported that the then-new Viper had a 50 percent improvement in torsional stiffness over previous model, along with electronic stability control, traction control, four-channel ABS, carbon fiber and aluminum skin, very impressive drag coefficient numbers, Pirelli PZero (Corsa for this car) tires, four-piston Brembo brakes with vented rotors at all corners, seven-inch full-color customizable instrument cluster, Uconnect RA3 or RA4 access in-vehicle connectivity system, Harman Kardon audio system, bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, LED turn signals, LED taillamps with integrating stop-and-turn illumination and snakeskin texture lens – all packaged in a platform that listed the top speed of the Viper SRT at 206-mph.
The SRT Viper GTS, as this car is ascribed, includes leather upholstery, accented colors in the seats, doors, center console and stitching; gunmetal trim on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window switch bezels, shifter base, park brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab handle on the center console; Sabelt racing seats with Kevlar and fiberglass shell, carbon fiber hood, roof, decklid and aluminum door panels and (in this case) ultra-lightweight Sidewinder II track wheels in Matte Black per the car’s factory brochure.
Presented in Code YR (Race Yellow) with Venom Black stripes and a primarily black interior; this Viper SRT GTS has been driven under 50 actual miles and is beautifully displayed. The platform has engine cross-bracing, rear window defogger, twin sport mirrors, engine oil cooler, power rack-and-pinion steering, dual side sport exhaust, airbags, six-way power seats, tilt steering column, power adjustable pedals, steering wheel mounted audio controls, power trunk release, power windows, air conditioning, cruise control, power mirrors, plus many other ingredients that make up the fearsome Viper platform.
Launch control is standard and helps deliver straight-line results, while Electronic Stability Control (ESC) provides graduated levels of stability and traction control that, as the driver gains experience and confidence, can make the decision to progressively reduce the amounts of assistance.
The Viper GTS is “designed for discriminating drivers who feel the journey is just as important as the destination.” It exhibits high performance heritage with classic lines and gill-shaped side ports, an elongated roofline and broad stance. High levels of quality are seen throughout with the famous Connor Avenue Assembly facility turning out a platform with handcrafted workmanship and advanced technologies. The Viper GTS was designed with pure purpose: aerodynamics, weight distribution, cooling technologies and accommodations for race gear all played a part in the sculpting of this Viper in a most stunning form.
Sources indicate that from the start of the Fifth Generation Vipers in 2013, a total of only 2,079 Vipers have been built, with only 591 listed as being manufactured for the 2013 model year.
As the 2013 Viper factory literature declares: “Its raw power combined with extraordinarily disciplined engineering creates an elite, like-no-other standout that was born to push aside all who dare challenge it.”
