Vehicle Description
A Nice Surprise
All too often these pre-war cars look, smell and drive like “old cars” and not “classic cars”. This 1940 LaSalle Model 52 is a notable exception. It is an attractively styled car without any of the sensory reminders of an older car and it starts, runs and stops like a much more recent classic. The engine and transmission are quiet and smooth-running and a delight to drive from the first time you press the starter button.
1940 LaSalle
This LaSalle was treated to a very nice restoration but retains its originality. Unlike many of these cars that have fallen into disrepair this Model 52, Four Door Sedan is like going back to the LaSalle showroom right before the War. The car is as clean as a pin and drives like new.
If it was needed to make this car correct and drivable, it was done.
They don’t get any Nicer!
• Paint and Chrome
The Dark Blue paint is in good condition with a few stone chips and other imperfections that mark it as a car that has been enjoyed. The paint gleams and shows off the car’s great lines.
Almost all of the exterior chrome was redone or replaced and gives a fresh look to this LaSalle.
The body and underside of the car are free of rust and the engine compartment is nicely detailed.
• Interior
The seat upholstery was all redone in period-correct tan fabric that makes an excellent contrast with the blue exterior. The door panels are in very good condition. The tan headliner has been replaced as has the carpet.
• Engine
The car’s 322 V-8 (130 hp) sits nestled in a detailed engine bay. It starts and runs as it first did when the car was built. The car was converted to a 12-volt system and all the lights, etc. work. The car still has its original wiring harness.
• Transmission
The 3-speed standard transmission shifts properly and smoothly.
• Tires, Brakes, Safety and Monitoring Systems
This LaSalle has 4 new wide whitewall tires that were just replaced.
All of the engine/systems monitoring gauges (temperature, fuel, amp and oil pressure) work properly. Similarly, the lights, horn, and turn signals (yes, turn signals) all work as does the radio, although the clock is stuck in 1940. The car does not have a heater and the original steering wheel is in good condition but has numerous cracks around the edge.
An Excellent Example of the last year of the production of the LaSalles
This LaSalle is a nicely restored—and unmolested—example of the very popular 1940 52 series—the last year GM offered these cars. These original cars are highly in demand and short supply. They therefore represent not just a great driving experience but a sound investment as well. And if there was ever a car that transports you back to the ‘40’s, this is it. Apart from the investment value of this car, it is hard to put a price on the feeling of enjoyment when other drivers and pedestrians wave and give you a “thumbs up.”
