Ford, Hennessey and Top Gear. To some, it seems an unlikely
amalgamation of corporate names. To others, it seems like a match
made in heaven. Every gearhead knows that the Ford F-150 Raptor is
one of the most capable pickups ever built. Astute gearheads know
that Hennessey Performance Engineering does an excellent job of
transforming "capable" into "incredible". And especially astute
gearheads might recognize this familiar yellow VelociRaptor from
its worldwide debut on BBC's Top Gear. That's right, this is the
actual truck that carried automotive antihero Jeremy Clarkson
across Canada. And Clarkson certainly rode in style, as the
pickup's vivid yellow vinyl gives way to a posh leather cockpit, a
Fox-enhanced suspension and a 6-speed, 623 horsepower drivetrain.

BODYWORK/TRIM
There were actually two of these pickups built for Series 22,
Episode 6 of Top Gear: one for the crew, and this beast, which
Jeremy Clarkson piloted through the frozen wastes of Canada. In
reality, the truck is Oxford White, with the bright yellow you see
reflected courtesy of a professional wrap. One close look at our
photographer's sunny day pictures proves that vinyl has been
well-maintained, showing only slight weahering. I'm sure the folks
at Ford's Dearborn assembly line probably didn't know they were
building a 'star car' when this rig rolled past, but, nonetheless,
fit and finish is as close to flawless as factory-applied hardware
can get. The truck's thick body, packed onto Ford's SuperCrew
chassis, utilizes buff sheetmetal modifications to enhance an
already beefy profile. And, in typical Hennessey VelociRaptor
style, there's an extensive list of aesthetic modifications that
includes: Fab Fours bumpers, a 10,000-pound Warn winch, window
tint, a 50-inch Rigid Industries light bar and an OR-Fab in-bed
tire carrier.
ENGINE
Developed to supplement Ford's super slick mod motor family, the
6.2 liter 2-valve Boss V8 under this Raptor's louvered hood is a
proven and reliable mill that combines the best aspects of power,
performance and efficiency. Its core design is a cast iron block
that utilizes aluminum pistons, roller rocker shafts, lightweight
aluminum heads and variable cam timing to make a stout 411
horsepower and an impressive 434 lb./ft. of torque. And since the
truck took a detour through Houston-based Hennessey Performance
Engineering, it also features a 2.9 liter supercharger that, along
with an air-to-water intercooler, cranks power up to 623
dyno-proven horses! If you've made it to this point in our
description, you probably know the Raptor is a lot of fun to drive.
It's solid, spry and, honestly, pretty nimble given its size and
weight. Now imagine those attributes with 35% more power. Twist the
key and the big engine whisks to life, routing a symphony of
baritone notes through Hennessey high-flow air induction and
Magnaflow cat-back exhaust. Goose the throttle and the tachometer
effortlessly floats toward redline thanks to Hennessey-upgraded
fuel injectors. And when you throws the transmission in to gear,
get ready for some serious wheel spin with the help of Hennessey
Engine Management Calibration.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Built on Ford's rugged P2 pickup platform this high-riding
off-roader features a slew of hardcore suspension upgrades. Behind
the Boss V8, an unbreakable 6R80 6-speed automatic transmission
sends power to an open front differential and an electronic locking
rear differential, complete with a thicker walled axle and tall,
4.10 gears. Holding that stellar drivetrain off the ground is a
rugged independent front and solid axle rear suspension, augmented
by unique SVT control arms, Raptor-exclusive leaf springs and Fox
Racing internal triple bypass shocks that allow 11 to 12 inches of
travel. Naturally, all that 4-wheel-drive prowess is regulated by a
list of sophisticated electronics including built in hill descent,
traction control, roll stability control, ABS, throttle sensitivity
and adjustable transmission algorithms. With tires this big, power
steering is certainly a welcome addition. Power brakes, which
consist of discs at all four corners, bring the truck's mass to a
quick and uneventful stop. At the back of the floors, a frame
mounted hitch is wired and waiting to tow your toy of choice. And a
massive front skid plate, 17-inch Method MR301 wheels and 315/70 BF
Goodrich All-Terrain T/As prove that while this truck is
exceptionally nice, it was made to get dirty!
INTERIOR
Inside this awesome 4x4 you'll find a flexible and comfortable
driving environment that has enough room to be your vehicle of
choice for almost any outing. Heated, Hennessey-branded captain's
chairs, backed by a factory Ford bench, are wrapped in high quality
leather that seems a nice touch given the truck's backwoods
intentions. At the base of those thrones, heavy duty floor mats
valiantly protect clean carpet. At the front of that carpet, a boxy
dash hangs familiar SVT telemetry beside dual-zone climate control
and Ford's acclaimed SYNC infotainment system. At the base of that
dash, a chrome shifter and controls for the truck's electronic
suspension aides center themselves on a unique, well-integrated
console. Opposite that console, silver-trimmed door panels frame
simple chrome handles above large Sony speakers. At the top of
those panels, the truck's solid black headliner is broken only by a
power moon roof. The driver stays connected to the trail through a
factory-issue steering wheel, which spins a centered rim around
cruise control, Bluetooth control and redundant audio control. And
the passengers haul gear in a sizable bed that stows a small cargo
extender behind an integrated tail gate step.
