This Cobra replica was delivered as a complete car and not a kit. It was built by Specialty Motor Cars with a staff of employees and craftsman with over 40 years of experience in the design and production of Cobra replicas.
Each frame is built using .120 wall 2" x 4" rectangular tubing to reduce frame flex as commonly found on round tube chassis. SMC custom build their own front cross member to accept Mustang II front suspension with power assist rack and pinion. In addition an X brace is welded in the center of the frame for added strength, easily handling the torque produced by big blocks. The rear of the frame is constructed to accept the Mustang GT rear suspension with four bar trailing arm design.
Body: SMC Bodies are hand laid and rolled, using only the finest materials available (ISO resins). They use 4 layers of 2 oz. mat followed by coremat and one 10 oz. layer of cloth. Steel reinforcements are glassed in at all stress and hinge points.
Front Suspension: SMC uses an independent front suspension wth un-equal length upper and lower control arms (Mustang II) with adjustable coil over springs and disc brakes.
Rear Suspension: The rear of the car uses Mustang GT suspension with triangulated four bar trailing arm design and adjustable coil overs. A pinion snubber is welded in place to eliminate rear end squat. For stopping power the rear is outfitted with disc brakes.
Drivetrain: This SMC Cobra is powered by a 351 Cleveland motor with a Weiand X-CELerator intake and a 650 Holley carburetor. Transmission is a Tremec 5 speed and a 8.8" 28 spline straight axle. Ignition uses MSD. The side pipes rumble at idle and are surprisingly docile while cruising at highway speeds.
Interior: Full vinyl interior in saddle tan with updated carpet and Cobra mats. In addition Dynamat was recently installed to improve on consistency of temperature control and low noise levels which makes this Cobra a pleasure to drive.
Overall: This Cobra Replica is truly a pleasure to drive whether in the city or on the highway. Car runs cool even in the hot Southern California summers. The viper red paint is 8.5 out of 10 and truly turns heads every where you go.
Built by SMC in 1997 this Cobra only has 3,950 miles. CA registration as a 1967 AC Cobra.
